Gourds are great, they're quite popular in Japan. I remember seeing a tv show where a crazy Japanese guy was making them into all kinds of things from "purses" to rucksacks (it had a kind of Russian Doll appeal - ie. lots of smaller and smaller ones inside).

I wonder if you could give us a quick rundown on how to make them. What to use to scoop out the inards and do you have to dry it out or seal it?
There is an indian newsagant down the road who sells a hard fruit of similar appearance on his fruit and veg stand. It's a much lighter beige colour but the skin is rock hard. Is that part of the gourd family?, if not where can you buy them?
