I bought a big bad awl at the Bushcraft show from Andrew Kirkham. Its an interpretation of a Trade Awl from Canada. They are made off set (cranked) to stop breakages I'm told. Its also double ended for long life in the field too. So use it, beak a point and you can flip it round and use the other end
Antler is traditional and tough so ideal for this beefy bit of kit. I had a slim red deer roll so drilled and filed to suit.
Its a big awl but does have a fine point to it for small work. I tried it on a bit of pine packing that was laying around. Few twists and its straight through.
I have no association with Andrew. But if you see him at a show. But one. Its a great tool, well made and he was a great fella to boot.
