can the colour of leather be changed

Would be interested in this too - I've got a little belt pouch for a penknife that's in a horrible raw leather colour.
 
Yes - with leather dye.
Punch brand from various shoe shops etc is OK for small areas - ie sheaths and belts.
Better results can be had with oil based dyes such as those from Le Prevo and other leather suppliers.
A home made black stain for veg tan leathercan be produced from vinegar and wire wool or even from iron tablets from the chemist crushed into water.
All these work well on pale leathers but if you want to lighten a leather....I dont know...
If the leather has had a "surface" put on it - like many fashion leather coats or sofas then Punch dyes do help tone it down but are not perfect.

If you have vegetable tanned leather, then you can darken the colour with darker dye. You might be able to bleach the leather to remove the dye.

With chrome tanned leather, you can use acrylic paint (ie: shoe dye or acrylic art colour) to change the colour.
