Does it give a different quench from old engine oil? Other than the smell of course?

I'd be interested to see scientific results.

I thought it was best to quench in a mineral ie engine oil? Vegatable ones have a much lower burning point I believe, sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon to give us the full facts and figures ;)

Some steels are water hardenable, some better in brine and some in oil.
The W in W1 (File steel) refers to Water.
The O on O1 refers to Oil
The A in A2 stands for Air.

There's a lot more to it than that and I've only really looked at it with regards to weld inspection so I'm sure someone with a brain will be along shortly.
