Not if your fire is managed correctly. The base of the kettle takes 90% of the heat. Cap'n Badger on here used a plasic handled jobbie at the moot for a fair few years until some whippersnapper put it on a "bonfire".. then it melted. But if you have your kettle to the side or suspended above the flames they do ok.
What about the large kelly kettles I know you don't hang these over the fire but they are easy to get going, boil water pretty quick, and you can use them more places as the fire is contained. If you do have a fire going they are even quicker to get going.
It might not be suitable for your requirements but i like to get as much use from my kit as i can and like it if i can have a bit of flexibility. We have one and i would not be without it i think its superb.
I have a kelly kettle already, and its good for just a few people, but I need a larger one, and with a kettle I can boil it, and then add the tea/coffee and serve, hanging it off to the side of the fire to keep it warm.
