Bushy No. 5

I have been footering about with Bushcraft type knives for a while now and this is my latest. I have fallen in love with scandi shapes at the moment and I wanted to make a fusion between a fuller and a forged scandi knife.

The blade and handle are both about 7mm longer than a WL.

O1 steel for the blade was brought up to welding temp with borax to achive a forge finnish even though the blade has never seen a hammer. It was given a full blade quench in warm oil and tempered at 250C for a RC of 58. I thought that a forge finnish would be better on a working knife as it does not show scratches etc as much as a polished blade.

The handle is made with Box Elder burl that have been stabilised but not dyed.

I use quarter inch stainless mosaic pins and a 6mm lanyard tube.

I used some black fibre from brisa to highlight the tang a little.

very nice! :) - would love to try a knife from 'stock' but just don't have the facilities to harden it.... :( never mind - to be honest i'm probably better off getting pre made blanks;) esp. if I hope to produce anything like this!

Stunning knife, I lilke it a lot. Just need to convince myself that I don't need another knife...

The only comment I have is that the lanyard hole looks a bit small, it may be a trick of the photo, but it could be a limiting factor in fitting a lanyard. Otherwise it's very nice, I particulary like the forged finish.

How much would one go for?

Very nice Lord Farquhar,
I especially like the finish - I've been trying to get hold of a blade like that for a while.
Are you interested in a commission? PM might be better if you are.

Hi its just a prototype at the moment i will probably go out and smash it to bits and destruction test it :) I have some big cherry logs to try it on :) I plan to make some modifications i want to use thicker 4mm steel and i want to shorten the grind to make it more robust.

The lanyard hole is about 4mm but i can use thinner tube in the future.

I have no idea of cost at the moment.

I have to get my hands on some more o1 and do some slight modifications. I also have to design a sheath for it. I will keep you posted :)

i'll certainly be looking forward to seeing it evolve LF (maybe i'll want one.....even more!)

ps. i found the deep grind quite appealing

O1 IMHO is a little brittle compared to simpler carbon steels it holds a mean edge and is great for the firesteels but i find simpler carbon steels are tougher and can take more of a battering. So with thicker O1 the thickness can compensate for the lack of toughness and a high grind is no way as strong as a shorter stocky one. The WL works as the steel is strong and wide.

Spot the non-blademith :togo:

Cheers for the info though its good to know.

Thicker certainly would be better and allow tasks such as battoning to be done with more 'confidence' in the knife.

I think the appeal of the deep grind is that it gives the blade a good balanced look, against the unfinished, very aesthetic, dark part of the blade.

the next one (when i can find some more steel) will be thicker and and with a stockier grind. I Plan to use simple pins and simple handle materials and i dont think i will give it a forge finnish. Than I plant to chop a tree in half with it :)
