I guess it works in the same way as leaf springs to even out the load and produce an even bend rather that just bending in the middle

I think your right on the money.
Lot less time and effort ( and skill ) then fashioning the real thing i guess.

I then went on to lash the whole bow and varnish. Adds nothing to performance but nice finish

I have made many bundle bows from Tonkin canes, and they perform very well. They are not toys, and the scouts use them for target practice and cloutin'. The draw weight varies from 20 - 40# depending on number of canes, thickness and draw length.
