Going to try the hammock tomorrow night. Jungle bag was bit cold last trip out in the bivi so got winter bag stuffed in the rucksack. It took bit of stuffing but doable. The compression sacks worth the money ? Saying that might just wrap in bivi and strap on outside maybe

Mine works, but it's a heck of an effort. It packs down to something like a football size. I know other folks find it works really well though.

Honestly ? personally I found it's easier to use a biggish dry bag and roll it up from the bottom, shoving the sleeping bag down as I go, trying to save as much top bit as possible so that I can fold it over and over to squish the bag down even more.
There's a definite knack to it, and it's not as tight as the lump that is the compression sack.

Cheers toddy I think that’s the way I will go to. Don’t want be wrestling with it in compression sack for ages. See if I can get knack of squashing it down in bag tidy. Cracking bag like new looking forward to tomorrow

Applying my 120kilos and all my strength I am unable to get the two ends of the 98pattern compression sack to meet.

My sleeping bag is getting old and I don’t like crushing it that tight, I’m sure it damages the filling.

The dry sack is a much better idea.

The Carinthian compression sack is better than the British Army one, although the later ones are not as good as the earlier ones. It means you can mount it externally on the ruck.
But it is much easier, and takes less room, to stuff it into a dry sack inside the ruck, because it fills into all the corner voids. (Stuff feet first so that the air in the insulation can escape easily.)
