Here's the hatchet I bought today. The maker's mark is difficult to read but I can make out it's B______ co. 288 no. 1

Any thoughts? Going to be rehandled & cleaned up a bit

I think you're right, thanks! They did make a no.2 hunters axe & the haft shape matches too. Will give it a good clean when I get home

I did buy a hickory handle the other day so will probably fit it rather than struggling to make one. I'll have to make the wedges myself
 
I see you've rehandled a Brades axe before. My axe head is currently soaking in rancid lime juice (wasn't supposed to be rancid but didn't have anything else - I suppose cola would work too). Once I've fitted the haft in the hole & hammered in the wedge, how important are the metal wedges across the wooden wedge (for which I'll use oak)?
 
I myself have only used a metal wedge once, mind you I do check my axes on a regular basis.
I have only had trouble with one and that was because the ash haft was still shrinking, I was in a hurry to do the job.
