your house!
Hello chaps, had ago at making a birch bark container, and have to say it is fiendishly simple to do. so, here goes.

First get your self some bark at least 1mm thick.

then cut some arrows down one side ( you will feel the best way to bend it so it doesn't break) either with your knife or scissors.

then cut slits in the opposite edge with about 4cm of over lap( so as to close the tube and not leave gaps, then feed the arrows into the slits.

then roll another length the same width as the first but with the clean inner bark facing in so you have a clean inner tube(You will see what I mean when you have the bark in your hands). this not only means you container is cleaner on the inside it also strengthens the whole thing.

so you now have a tube and a lot of tinder as a bonus. go have a cuppa.

Then carve a base.

And a cap.

I have sealed mine using pine resin, i collected this by just snapping it off some trees in Plym valley country park ,when we lived in Plmstock. They were Scots pines, so have a look around. i have added saw dust to mine to put a little structure in(weather that helps or hinders is yet to be seen) kept in a small tobacco tin which doubles as the means to melt it to by holding it over the gas hob for a second or two, then applying with a stick and finally smoothing with a wet finger.

And here we have the finished result.

I hope you like it, and go have a go, you don't even have to use bark, card would be a good stand in, or even leather for a soft tub?

Very nice work there Southey, really like the design, where did you get the bark from, did you just cut it from a live tree?

Yes I did, Though the tree is marked for death to please "non cutters", if you find a stand of birch there is more than likely to be a fallen tree around, which is more "Ethical" to cut from.

mate you are a legend, that has made my eveningmade me laugh to, its nice to put a face to the name to.
thanks for the antler mate, it really is appreciated, maybe one day like i said you will need something doing out of leather and i can repay the favour mate.
take care.

Nice work! This is a type pf container where old birch bark works best (the fresh one will stretch a little). It is possible to pin the bottom (drill a few 2mm holes, insert slivers of wood, trim). But the pine pitch style works fine too, and is waterproof. I was taught that putting a mold inside them (e.g. split round and two wedges, but oval is possible, and traditional for larger ones) overnight helps in making them hold their shape long term. Must try making one flat enough to work as a soap container one day.

Hmm, now I'll have to make some like yours for spices in my backpacking kit... Scratching designs into the surface so I can tell them apart is probably the way to go, as is distinctive stoppers

For quick containers I generally make "berry basket" style containers from aspen or elm bark; quick and easy to make if one finds some nuts, berries or whatnots when out.

Cheers guys! very glad you like it, I think I'll use you pins on the next Forestwalker, going to use this as either a match box or a sewing kit, both of which will need to be kept dry.

Many thanks.

Dave.

Nice job! I like the idea of reversing the inner roll of bark. I lined mine with various types of paper and card (before I rolled it up and glued it) which I find makes the interior even less likely to snag. But I really like that simple stopper design! Great, thanks for sharing :)
