Had a great day out today with Hugo, we decided it was about time we went for a good long bimble instead of sitting around in the woods drinking tea, cooking pancakes and carving spoons etc, so a good old bimble it was.
We set off up the lane where the springs were in overflow because of the wet weather
Walking up this lane is like walking in a supermarket, loads of edibles to be had here, Garlic Mustard, Violets, Primroses, Cleavers, Burdock to mention just a few, and today the Yellow Archangel was putting on a glorious display of colour (and taste)
Further evidence of the rain, a field drain in over time,
Further up and getting into the fields
The woods, not going to these ones today
we are heading off to the ones on the top of the hill way off in the distance.
Just need to negotiate some soggy patches on the way
Walking up past the big house, the wall is their garden boundary
Thats better, back on mud again
and water
Nearing our first brew stop
Ahh, a nice cuppa in a nice setting
all refreshed, it's time to head up hill to the trees on the top
nearly there
at the top
looking down towards the farm, we walked though about 40 mins previously
View out over the Weald
we had a poke around in the woods on the top of the hill, last of the Bluebells
and a glorious Peacock Butterfly, managed to get this one to sit on my finger tip after the photo
Feeling peckish and parched, so we went down into the Beech woods
where it was time for a brew and some grub
fully fuelled, we headed off through the woods again
and found the Purple Orchids
and Wild Strawbs, we will be back here in a few weeks to collect the fruit
Out of the woods now and on the South Downs Way for a mile
Then back down towards a different Woodland that we call the 32C
but, we decided to head for the Wikiup woods, where, yep, it was time for another brew, yes that is a different stove, i had two with me today that i had made and wanted to try to see which style i prefer
masses of St Georges mushrooms around
after a little while we got walking again, when something caught my eye down in the undergrowth, from the path we could see a structure in the woods, this of course, meant we had to go and investigate, ok to be nosey, first off we found a couple of Ally pans
then the structure
which looking at it had not been used for a long while, but still had clothing, what looked like a sleeping bag or blanket and water proofs, it really did look like some place where someone didnt want to be found, it was well hidden and really hard going to actually get to it
after that it was back up to the path
and back down the side of the hill towards the Village and our cars
Looking over the valley
and a last few hundred meters through the trees before we are back at our cars
Really enjoyable bimble of about 8 miles in glorious sunshine with good company, roll on next week.
