Best way to use a tarp with a tent

What pitch style works best as a tent entrance? Also for using between 2 tents. Do you use separate poles or string them between the two tents. With a single tent do you use one or two poles?

This is for cycle touring and backpacking so I won't have trekking poles with us.

Trekking poles are very light and collapse down small, might be worth considering. Here are a couple cheapish Kelty poles I use to walk that make adjustable tarp supports. Ok, it's not cycle backpacking, but we knocked up the tarp in a few minutes once the rain started, the adjustment being way easier than getting wet guying out lines.

There must be books on tarpology now, best thing to do is set up and try. Ours was simply a sitting and cooking area for a bit.

If you remove the handgrips and baskets, a couple of hiking poles will tape snugly to your crossbar.
