Hi Folks,
I keep bees. I have a fair few hives and though primarily I keep them for honey and interest I collect bees wax after extracting the honey and other things during the year.
Most of the time I trade it in for new pressed foundation. However I have a few traders who buy/trade for wax from me. As I don't cut my wax with anything chemical wise, and I don't add bulking powders or additives.
All I do with my waz, is literally melt and course sieve it, to extract bits such dead bees (though the odd bit still gets through).
So it occurred to me, some folks might want bees wax for waxing axes heads (stopping rust), leather working, waterproofing etc.
I have never looked at it commercially.. and somewhere I should have some 1oz moulds and I am not out to make lots of money, but the odd penny raised would help me keep my bees and it would be nice to know that it was going to people who were passionate about their hobby and getting used. o
So really this post is just to gauge interest and what peoples views were.
I do make a wood preserver out of it, by mixing in linseed oil, to a set ratio and I use that to treat my hives with. Works wonders as a wood polish too, as long as you don't mind a slight linseed smell for a day or two till its airs. A friend also uses it on his leather tack and armour. The recipe goes back century's. So cannot claim to be doing anything new but its pretty good.
My primary focus has been the honey in the main, but if there was some interest I could look at costs and seeing what was feasible. I won't be doing mega quantities, as I don't have the time, but I get a few kilos or so a year and have a few years worth stacked up in storage at the moment.
Interested to know..what folks views are.
Cheers
John
