What is the Bushcraft UK (BCUK) Bushcraft Challenge?​

The BCUK Bushcraft Challenge is a tiered set of challenges for members of the Bushcraft UK forum, allowing members to develop, practice and showcase their skills in a way which encourages learning and progression within the community. It is accessible to people new to the craft and those who have 'been there and done that', with the three levels of difficulty providing a challenge dependent on your current level of ability.

Most importantly, it is a fun way to get involved in the craft we all love, as part of a community

How do I participate in the Bushcraft UK Bushcraft Challenge?​

1. Choose a challenge you'd like to start with. Create a thread with the title of the challenge you're undertaking. This thread is where you will post all your evidence - pictures and a description of what you did and anything you learned.
2. Select the correct prefix for your challenge. Most people will start with 'Preparing for Challenge'
3. When you're ready to go, change your prefix to "Getting stuck in!"
4. For each task you complete, please post photographs/videos where possible or give a detailed written experience of what you did, challenges faced and then the outcome where videos/photos are not possible
5. When you have completed the task that you are currently working on, post up and ask one of the challenge staff to verify your challenge status. They will then update your thread prefix to show your current completion status, either Basic, Intermediate or Master Complete.

What do I do when I think I've completed all the tasks in a tier?​

When you think you've completed all of the tasks for either Beginner, Intermediate or Master for a category, post a thread with the prefix 'Need Assessment' and post a link to each of the evidence threads showing you've completed it. A mod will then update the BCUK Challenge Leaderboards thread to show your completion of the relevant category in each tier.

Is there a prize or a badge or something?​

Once we reach v1.0 and onwards there may be something... who doesn't love a shiny thing to show off?!

Taking part in the Bushcraft UK Bushcraft Challenge should be challenging, rewarding and something accessible to all. It should also be something which helps to showcase bushcraft as a skill within a positive light, whose practitioners operate within the laws of the land and with respect to the environment and others.

This means that both those creating and updating the challenge and those taking part in it have a part to play.

Guiding practice for challenge staff and contributors:​

1. Tasks must be possible for people who do not own woodland or an area of land larger than a domestic garden
2. Tasks must be possible to carry out safely and without breaking any laws or statutes
3. The challenge is meant to be fun and present the opportunity for people to progress and build on their skills and experience in an environment of learning
4. Support and feedback must be constructive, positive where at all possible and seek to encourage learning
5. The challenge will be updated no more regularly than on the first of each calendar month, in order that people are not constantly chasing the latest version once they're close to reaching their current tier of completion.

Participant Code of Conduct​

1. Tasks should be carried out in a manner that ensures the safety of yourself, other people and property
2. Tasks should be carried out with awareness and respect of the environments in which they are carried out
3. Participants are fully responsible for carrying out tasks in a manner which adheres to all local laws, regulations and statutes. We cannot moderate this but will trust that you are adhering to local laws, regulations and statutes unless you state/display this is clearly not the case
4. If you are using sharp tools, building a fire or are in a remote area when carrying out tasks, you must ensure you have suitable medical and personal protective equipment and contingencies in place to allow you to carry them out safely
5. When making fires you must do so in a safe manner which does not cause environmental damage, or damage property that does not belong to you or in which you do not have permission from the land owner
6. We expect people to act with honour and integrity. Ultimately, anyone cheating the system is cheating themselves and no one else.
