axe handle can i shorten length?

hi, done a quick search.couldnt find anything .its a cheap axe from a garden center.wooden handle, axe head has 41/2 stamped on it,the handle is roughly 3 ft could i shorten the handle length i dont want to ruin it balance wise. but want a smaller axe length to carry in woods but cant afford a gransfor and dont really have space for different axes .how would i do it without the handle splitting etc.

You don't.

That handle is shaped to a purpose and the head is the right weight for the handle. If you must shorten it, you will need to remove the entire handle and re-handle with a different length. It would probably be cheaper to but a cheap axe in the right length though
