First time poster here!

So at what temp is temper effected?

I expoxied a hande on my new roselli leuku and pukko...the wood cracked...so i boiled the whole thing (water at boiling will not go above 200 degress F or 100 degress C)....and I was able to work the wood off without hammering or cutting...

Think I destroyed the temper or am I worrying for nothing?

In my limited experience I think you are worrying about nothing.

I have seen threads where folk have boild the handle of knives and to no ill effect, I think Rapidboy did it to a W/s Woody

;) Oh and Welcome!!!!!! ;)

Exactly right, pignut. I only viewed that thread/tutorial on BB last night, so it's fresh in my mind! RB boiled a WS micarta knife to melt the epoxy and remove the scales before fitting his own curly birch ones.

As the other replies have said - boiling should have no effect.

It's worth a look if anyone's interested - he did an excellent job:

I think for O1 steel, the tempering temp is around 250ºC to 300ºC for mid to high 50s on the Rockwell scale. You would need to take the knife hotter than this to soften it further, so boiling water is no problem. :)

Boiling a knife has been done many times. I think if you had put it in a pressure cooker you may have something to worry about :D . As for normal boiling I dont think their will be a problem. I think temering can start at about 200C but I am no expert.

Now temper as in emotion is a different matter!

There is a direct linear relationship between the ambient air temperature in summer and public unrest statistics.

It shouldn't bea big deal at all, I've seen people put SAK's in the dishwasher overnight and they come out clean and shiny when the cycle's through.

(Ones with ALOX handles mind you, I made the mistake of doing so with one my cellidor handled ones. Needless to say, they became *ahem* slightly deformed) :)

Cheers,

Adam
