Brass goes hard very quickly and shatters and splits when hammered without heat; but even a heat gun will give you enough heat if you don't knock it about too much.

Yep, most are solid brass, Ive got a load from old plugs cut off broken electricals, made an air rifle trigger a while ago for a falcon fn19, as said earlier a heat gun would be enough to allow bashing about, was thinking about using them for knife pins or some sort of handle decoration.

Been thinking about drilling the hole slightly smaller and filing the hole to suit, sold my mill and lathe last year so cant use them, bummer, should have bought a bigger shed to allow space in the workshop for them.

You can still buy the round pin plugs for use with lighting, I know that means spending money but some people might chuck them out.
