All woodsmoke is apparently carcinogenic!

It is but in an outdoors situation you would not inhale in large enough amounts for it to be of any real effect, light a fire in an unventilated room and it would be a different story. For the science minded the gases are Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrous Oxides (NX) and carbon particulates (C).

Thanks for that guys, good link too.

Apparently poplar is not a good one either- very acrid smoke.

I initially also thought yew would be bit nasty but, after a bit of googling there seem to be a lot of people saying that, if it is well seasoned it burns really long, hot and clean. That said, I would still be little bit cautious about cooking straight over it.
