  • Merry Christmas Guest, we hope that you have a great day wherever you are, and we're looking forward to hearing of your adventures in the New Year!
Can someone clarify for me what an 'open canoe' is? I thought all canoes were open. If it's closed, isn't it a kayak? ;) We just call them canoes. Like how 'hockey' doesn't need the clarification of the word 'ice'.

It's just a throwback.
For a long time over here kayaks were also called canoes(or at least they were where I grew up). We had canoe classes at school(kayaks) and a canoe hire company(kayaks) in the village.
"Open Canoes" were in the minority and that's the way they were described. These days most folk call a canoe a canoe and a kayak a kayak(Except the newspapers, they still don't seem to have a clue:rolleyes: ).

Nice link mr dazzler. I've got a spot on my bookshelves where the "Build a skin-on-frame Greenlander kayak" books seem to be breeding. I think they're trying to tell me something:).

[Edit] - Oops, type too slow.

Ah - the good old sailing canoe!
A boat builder in Cardigan built a modern version of one and Ray Goodwin (the guy RM canoed with in Canada [in a canvas/cedar canoe after the birch bark canoe RM built was not up to the job of being paddled down the river]) tested it for - as I recall - Canoeist magazine, one of the titles I too used to write for.
As I recall he said it was OK to sail but poor for paddling, - making it more of a sailing boat than a canoe I guess....
I regularly sail my canoe using a single triangular sail fitted onto my canoe pole - traditional skills!

Having said that, I do enjoy canoeing. Would probably enjoy it more if I could train the dog to sit still while in the canoe...

what if you play hockey on grass? its just hockey on ice its ice hockey.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the 'canoes', guys.

As for:
Where does "ice" come in to a game played by teenage girls in short skirts?

Haven't you seen Showgirls? ;) The version I'm taking about is the one with the stick with the slightly angled, flattened end part, not the ankle-hooking inverted walking cane, if I'm catching your drift.

And it's when you play it on surfaces other than ice that it needs clarification, ie: road hockey. Or when you play with something other than a puck, ie: ball hockey, or beer can hockey (usually empty). This is probably a misunderstanding we have more with Americans than Brits, so I apologise for causing any confusion.

Back to the subject at hand, my dad had an old cedar and canvas canoe restored last year, and it's beautiful to paddle. Wouldn't want to portage it anywhere, though. It's heavy enough that just getting it from the rack to the water is a challenge. I've been thinking of making one of these http://gaboats.com/boats/snowshoe14.html for a bit more portability.

wondering if there are any canoeists (canadian/ open boat etc.) or sea kayakers here.
i myself am a whitewater/surf kayaker, but i have a load of books on sea kayaking and canoeing. i used to do reviews of gear, dvd's and books for playak, and got sent a load of books by pesda press. (great publisher) i have a large portion of their back catalogue, and if there is interest it would be nice to find new owners for them. so, if there is an interest, i will put a thread up in the swap shop over xmas (when i can get home and see how many i actually have)
it would also just be interesting to see who does what, re; water sports.

I'm an open canoe owner.

Im a Surf Kayaker, flat/white water paddler and sea kayak. I also do a sport of canoeing

I was a bcu certified instructor for surf and white water paddling and have certification is sea and open also..

I was much more active in England here in the netherlands due to nobody wanting to join me in my hobby I kinda don't do hardly any paddling at all busy preping the sea kayak for a padlle around the ijsel and a few overnighters on the islands (solo of course!! as nobody seems interested to join me!!)

I am a Level 4 coch in open canoe, have run courses for forum members in the past, lead expeds for a company sending folk around the world to do a bit of paddling (amongst other stuff) and coz I do not have 2 star Kayak I now cannot assess 2 star canoe - bloodi silly new BCU regs!:banghead:

I had the same problem in the end I gave up ;) (like most other level 4 coaches me thinks!)

I have a Klepper Aerius II. The frame is from the '50's and the skin is a modern quatro: ex-services in olive and black.

Mainly use it for sea fishing when on holidays - West coast of Scotland, Anglesey, or South of England. English lakes occasionally.

Sometimes rig it with a main and jib (and lee boards) if the conditions are ok.

Also have a Klepper Master. Depending on how that's set up its an ok rowing boat/ tolerable sailing boat/ mini speed boat (untested) - it came with a 15hp engine which is absurdly heavy and overpowered. (Note to self: must get shot of the engine and find a more sensibly sized one soon.)

Contemplating doing some extended island hopping with the kayak and wondering about taking a bike on board...
