While out bimbling earlier I came across these which look rather like boletes?

I have looked in my field guide to mushrooms but nothing really matched them.

They don't change colour when pressed, have almost no smell and the stems are rather

straight. Any ideas?

They do not change colour by pressing the underside or cutting in half

In the photo you can see a fairly poor specimen which has been half munched - not by me ;)

As you can see there is a lot of red colouring under the cap.

Definately not Ceps. They are white pored.

I would say Bay Bolete, but seems very odd if it doesn't bruise blue.

I have seen some ceps that did not have white pores, but yellow ones. Pic from wikipedia (not the most reliable of sources!!!!) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...0px-Boletus_edulis_EtgHollande_041031_091.jpg

I stand to be corrected however :) I thought that there were actually several different sort of sub-speciese of ceps that didn't always conform to the ideal cep shape - e.g. some had narrower `straight up and down` stems, pore colour, etc.etc.

xylaria

Bushcrafter (boy, I've got a lot to say!)
Xerocomus ferrugineus:confused: It is related to the bay bolete.

There are 15 differant fungi that are in the sub-sect edules, and according to regis courtecuisse only these can be called ceps. But old Reg doesn't know what triptophan is so I don't trust every thing he says.

Some of this group have yellow pores, or age to have yellow pores.

To be truthful I don't ID thoroughly boletes for the pot, If it doesn't have yellowy-red pores I am cooking and eating it. Some of them are awful though.
