Hi, I have got a friend (honestly ) who has asked me for advice on binoculars and I am not sure what to tell him.
He is a lave net fisherman and fishes on the Severn. Lave net fishing involves wading right out into the river and scooping up salmon that have been stranded by the tide in huge hand held nets, well that's how I understand it. The river bed is constantly changing and he knows where fish are by watching the actions of the birds (seagulls) and the Severn is about a mile wide where he fishes.
So his spec is, he doesn't want to spend a lot of money and I don't think he needs the best lens. He needs to be able to observe the behaviour of the gulls from a mile away.
He is currently using a pair of WW2 German submariner fixed focus glasses 7x50 that he bought from a soldier returning from the war 60 odd years ago. They are not that clear and he is looking for something that will do the job a bit better.
I know probably anything at all would work better. I am looking for cheap, sturdy reliable and easy to get hold of and they must be able to do the mile.
I don't really use glasses myself, I always have a camera, if my camera can't see it then I can't photograph it and I don't want it but that's just me. So any advice will be gratefully received.
Thanks for looking.
Colin
