Acorn Growth

I found these acorns this morning. I haven't seen them like this before. The growths on the side look almost like they're using the acorns as a host. Any ideas? Sorry the photo's not the best.

I've never seen that type of gall growth before. Most of the oak trees around here have marble galls and a couple of artichoke ones though.

Yep, 'tis the Knopper Gall, first found on these shores circa 1960.
