This appears to be a piece of cane or bamboo, but I can imagine seeing this being made of wood, bone, or antler as well. It is something, which when once fashioned, that could be carried in one's kit along with the ubiquitous and omnipresent paracord. Just seems like a great piece of kit.
It's a good way to get started and something else to file away in the 'just in case i need it' section of the brain
You don't need the socket at the top, a clove hitch works well too. yes the string will twist round a bit but as the spindle isn't rotating very far in either direction it's not a problem
