Haven't had much time for carving because of work, but I managed to finish up one spoon this week.

Chicken curry with rice tonight> I can see me filling my face with that spoon.
Forginhill: your thoughts on food-safe finishes, please.

Robson, I forgot to answer your question. I think you're much more knowledgeable on finishes than I am. I'm just using walnut oil. I plan to get some flax seed oil to try as well. I know you've mentioned a treatment process involving heat. I haven't tried that yet, but I like the idea. At this point I just put on a few coats at room temp.

Here's a little spatula, all-purpose spoon I made today out of mesquite.

Nice spatula. Could have used that last night when the *&%^&^$ plastic/silicone one went in two different directions.

Walnut oil, huh? Does it smell nice? Always curious to learn the preferences of others. Thanks.

The real advantage with the 325F heat treatment is that the oil gets sucked into the wood as it cools.
Then, not even boiling soup can push the oil out to be replaced by soup. Charles' Law is the rule of the game.

I know it always runs the risk of cracking but 3:30 isn't a long time until you're watching the clock!
4 minutes and sweet birch wood began to fry brown a little in spots.
