    What did you buy today?

I lived in Moscow through the winter, one year. During the day, the surface would melt ever so slightly, then freeze again, leaving a surface made up of shallow little hollows. There's no point putting salt down when the temperature gets really low, so they sprinkle sand over the ice to create...

Searching for an insulated sleeping mat (NOT inflatable!)

What I meant was putting the mylar sheet inside my bag, silver side against my body, as an extra layer, in addition to the kip mat. Or if that turns out to be uncomfortable or noisy, between kip mat and bag.

Government Consultation - Knife Sales: executive sanctions.

I fully agree. The penalty for non-compliance also seems to me to be ridiculous, when compared to GDPR. Whereas GDPR sets out "fines of up to 10 million euros, or, in the case of an undertaking, up to 2% of its entire global turnover of the preceding fiscal year, whichever is higher".

Searching for an insulated sleeping mat (NOT inflatable!)

I got a two Bundeswehr folding sleeping mats a couple of years ago but still not found to opportunity to test them. It's a fairly lightweight mat but not exactly compact as it folds into a rectangle 27.5 x 38 x 3.5 cm. It apparently doubles as a stiffener in the German Jägerrucksack and the...

Government Consultation - Banning Ninja Swords

I struggle to understand why any government would think that it is more useful to ban a specific item, rather than enforce already existent laws that forbid murdering and injuring other people.

    Met office "faking" climate data

The carbon dioxide used to make fizzy drinks is usually captured and purified by-product of an industrial process. I'd it was not captured and used this way, then it would just be released straight into the atmosphere anyway. I don't think that carbon capture and storage is widespread, yet.

I have given up on sanity

I don't use the timer on the cooker but I often glance at the clock when I've taken off my watch because I've been washing and rinsing things in the sink.

    Laminated picture card translation thingies???

Level of proficiency varies a lot with age. In general, younger adults (20 - 35) speak and understand better than older people. When I was in Poland in February 2024 I found that I could get by with a few words of Polish to start the conversation and switch to English with youngsters but with...

    Customs/tax?

If you buy something from outside the UK and have it shipped to you, it is subject to Vat on the cost of the goods plus shipping plus the administrative fee that the shipping carrier might charge. For an item costing £90 plus £10 shipping plus £15 administrative fee, you will end up paying a...

    What did you buy today?

Paraffin heaters are very common over here. Castorama (French B&Q) sells great big 20 litre jerry cans of "deodorised" paraffin for them at €40.90 (so €2.045 per litre). https://www.castorama.fr/combustible-liquide-pour-poele-a-petrole-desaromatise-saxoil-20l/5420020000654_CAFR.prd

Looking at some of those tool rolls, I don't see how they would roll up when the compartments are full.

    Vehicle tool kit

An interesting thread... We have one car; it's provided by SWMBO's work with full roadside recovery. We got the latest one last week, replacing the diesel VW Tiguan with a petrol hybrid Toyota RAV4. We don't really need to carry a toolkit capable of fixing anything serious. When we go away...

    Dealing with Rings

I've been to Hull no end of times but the most recent must go back to about five years ago. The old docks have been transformed into a very artsy district full of 'spaces' for 'pop-up' exhibitions and restaurants, but the physical structures of warehouses and train tracks are still there. And...

What sort of winter do you predict?

Climatologists predict colder than recent years because of La Niña, but still warmer than pre-industrial averages. https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/10/04/europe-could-be-facing-a-colder-winter-than-last-year-because-of-la-nina
