A brand new replacememt of my No 1 is about £4,000 now. It can pump up over 10l/min over a long distance and should last for decades but it's still expensive. Even keeping my old one running would be expensive if I didn't have some old parts and didn't make my own valve clacks (big rubber...
I've not really heard the phrase before and funnily enough you can and we do! Our ram pump does exactly this, pushes all our water a few hundred meters up a hill to our house. Currently it's our most sustainable asset and it has meant a constant supply of fairly clean eater over the last few years.
It is not that simple. We do have a land line and indeed we have a non-mains powered land line phone as the mains powered one does not work during a power cut.
However, the phone exchange sometimes does not work when we get power cuts. Moves are afoot and council cash being spent on going...
At the time we took part in several online meetings as they were closed due to covid. What was interesting is what was said when they didn't realise the public was listening. I have also spoken at great length to several managers and councillors and know a few details via local people.
In my...
That's, well, rubbish. There's plenty of reports about the problems there.
Edit to add. I don't know that much about Birmingham but have spoken at length to our council as, despite now being expected to pay £3k a year in tax, they don't collect our recycling. It became very clear they didn't...
Most of them are probably working.
I don't know about Birmingham but the places I have lived the tips do not take domestic waste, our current one does not. It also will not accept many types of vans.
Perhaps a better idea would be if the managers and councillors that created the problems got...
It's nice to see plenty of hibernating creatures waking up. Loads of various bumbles, bees and flies about, the lizards and slowworms are enjoying the sun and I've seen several oil beetles digging their burrows (probably violet ones).
Anyone who doesn't know about oil beetles it's worth...
I note the EU has today published some of it's own strategy, although it still seems to he thinking about what to advise people as I couldn't find anything useful. (It would be useful if they actually did something meaningful before it is needed)...
We have a lot of boggy ground and boggy plants but I don't know of much that would out compete brambles.
I'm not keen on introducing plants as you may introduce something that will out compete a rare plant. To reduce the risk you could move something from nearby, subject to the various laws...
I think most people here will have a reasonable understanding of their neighbourhood to know what might happen.
To contrast to your tale, when we had a storm and lengthy powercut a few years back a family rocked up at their holiday home. One of their trees had fallen across the road blocking...
There plenty of people who can afford to be prepared though, just look at all the people who pay for all the junk food deliveries etc.
That would take the pressure off the the authorities so they could look after those that need it.
I suppose there's different levels of preparedness. I can last for one day, I can last for one week, I can last for one month, I'm allowed to hunt my neighbours sheep and tie up anyone with a foreign accent, etc.
I do find these leaflets a bit strange as I expect those that read them don't need...
The damage looks too neat for damage I've seen from red and roe deer.
I note there are beavers not too far away - https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/beavers-set-to-bring-biodiversity-boost-to-south-downs-wetland/
