Folder with just a knife and saw?

There's a few videos on them on YT. Some of the makers are ok, the Chinese knock-offs are pretty terrible, but universally recognized that Victorinox made the best ones, which isn't a surprise to anyone. Problem with the new GAK / Soldier from Victorinox is that it isn't UK legal. Blade is too...

Folder with just a knife and saw?

No, it's a a normal straight blade, not serrated - see my photo earlier in the thread.

Here’s my one to give you a sense:

Folder with just a knife and saw?

I wouldn’t agree with ‘quite a few tools’. The saw has a multi-tool tip on it, and there’s an awl and corkscrew - that’s it. They don’t affect the thickness of the GAK, which is two-layer. It’s also the largest UK Legal knife Victorinox ever made (true of the 108mm series), and the saw is widely...

Folder with just a knife and saw?

Victorinox German Army Knife (GAK) would be my suggestion.

    Woodlore pro knife

Mears is the reason it’s always been O1. He is still of the opinion that it’s perfect for bushcraft.

    Woodlore pro knife

Don’t get me wrong, the Pro / Nomad Meister is a great knife, wonderfully designed and does have a great feel in the hand because of the taper in both directions (to the tip, and to the handle). I had a SWC Woodlore Pro, but in the end sold it because, for me, the original Alan Wood Woodlore...

    Woodlore pro knife

Essentially, yes - Mears designed the Pro to be better at a wider variety of tasks that you would beed in a bushcrafting context. It’s still very good with wood, and has a taper so that the tip is slimmer and slightly more pointy than the original Woodlore for fine carving. It’s a small...

What do you lot do for a living?

I get paid to write and teach at university. Essentially, I never grew up, and I enjoyed being a student so much I never wanted it to end. So, after my degree I did a Masters. That was lots of fun too and so I signed up for a PhD…you get the idea.

    Best bushcraft trousers?

It’s difficult to give advice without a budget in mind. If you want ‘the best’, then it probably is Fjallraven. The Vidda Pros are the trousers that most of the instructors wear. Helikon Tex make good, cheaper ones. Revolution Race are pretty decent, and look snazzy. Keela Heritage Trousers are...

What knife(knives) do you use bushcrafting?

I suppose this confirms that knives are a really individual thing - this profile is by far the comfiest I have ever used! It feels like an extension of my hand. Other Woodlores I have held are different, which is one of the problems - Alan Wood was never that consistent in the geometry of the...

What knife(knives) do you use bushcrafting?

Well done! She’s 24 years old, and well used, but I do take pretty good care of her.

What knife(knives) do you use bushcrafting?

It’s a good guess but it’s not right! It’s not a Helle. Another clue: it is actually an exposed full tang. Must be my fat fingers in the way…

What knife(knives) do you use bushcrafting?

I own a few, but most of the time I have one fixed blade that I use. Here’s me making a Kochanski bucksaw with it. 50 Gryffindor points to anyone who can identify it…
