Where to get fire lighting bits 'n bobs

Hi all, I am running a bushcraft and fire lighting area at a Green Fair just south of Bath this weekend (link here if anyone's interested) and ideally would like a few pre-made bow drills, some steel strikers and fire sticks for people to try/buy - anyone know where is a good place to get...

Hi all, I have for sale this rare knife and selling for £450 (includes SD postage within UK). Completely unused and in mint condition - the only thing I've done is to give the blade a wipe with some Camellia Oil. More details below and pics below - please get in touch if you're interested...

Place to camp out near Brecons?

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone knows a good bushcrafty place to camp out around the Brecon Beacons (ideally north east-ish, towards Hay-on-Wye)? Thanks in advance! Rich

Books on Bushcraft Knife Handle Design + assembly?

Hi all, I'm considering hashing together a 'hand-made' knife, although I've already skipped the hard work and ordered one of Ray's JP blades....so all I need now is the knowledge and wherewithal to make a suitable handle for it. Anyone recommend a decent book/manual for making a bushcraft...

Enviromental conservation life..More bother than it's worth?

It makes sense that building housing within woodland, no matter how eco friendly, is heavily restricted. It does verge on the idiotic at times – such as in this case: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/02/285904.html But given the shortage of woodland in the UK compared to the massive...

    Sloe Gin Concerns...

Upwards of 2 months is all you need; basically you'll know when it's ready because it won't be overpoweringly 'gin' tasting and will have the sloe bitter-sweetness.

    Tea

Yep - you'll have to buy them as part of the military ration pack - I used to get mine from these guys: http://www.militarymart.co.uk/search.asp?prod_id=8474&search=ration&offset=&grpid=8474#prod_anchor

    Charred Cloth

I just stuffed an old cotton t-shirt into an empty baked bean tin, put a couple of layers of foil as a lid on, poked a hole in and stuck it on a bar-b-q amongst the embers. It'll start smoking, when it stops fish it out and you have top notch char cloth. One t-shirt lasted me 2 years!

    How Long?

Not much more than a week I reckon - that was with the TA and cadets, so dossing under a poncho every night and getting rudely woken (or not as in one case) by people attacking the camp. Definitely need to do some longer bushcraft expeditions...maybe we sould club together and organise some...

    Knives on planes

Ok cool - happy with the knife situation - it's going in hold luggage, without being serruptitiously hidden. The billy can is a good point though! I will probably put it in top of my bag for the hold and let them know when I'm checking it in and ask if it will be a problem .... then face the...

Bimble, badgers, make shift windsheild, fox, hawk and chestnut tree. PICTURE HEAVY!

I like the unintentionally 'arty' pics of the fox! We've not had snow yet in the west country but first layer and I'll be following suit for a day of tracking!

    Metal grill alternatives

An alternative 'grill' has to be the hot rock option - find one or a few non-porous (ie granite much better than limestone) and dry rocks, lob them on the fire (if they're seriously wet - such as having been submerged in a lake they'll explode...) let them get scortching hot and voila! you have...

    Knives on planes

Yeah thanks guys - it'll go in amongst my hiking gear (wihtout being obviously hidden) in the luggage for the hold and I am pretty sure that will be fine. 911 did indeed change things, although I don't think the laws have changed as such, just peoples reaction to these sorts of things. I'm...

    Knives on planes

Hi all – anyone know what the situation is with regards to taking a bushcraft knife on a plane in main luggage (not hand luggage obviously!) I’ve got a work skiing trip to France via Geneva (Easyjet) this weekend and don’t plan on doing much skiing but rather taking myself off for some alpine...

    Favourite bit of kit

It has to be my Ventile jacket, partly because I managed to buy it in mint second hand condition off eBay for just £66 inc postage (!) but mainly because it has seen me through some horrendous weather and has been the definition of practical throughout.I'm not entirely sure on the make - the...
