    Government emergency website

I grew up during the Cold War. Downwind from an Air Force base. Scarred for life. Still prepping, even though the front brain knows I'll be vaporized in the initial blast.

    Government emergency website

When I finish with a bleach bottle, I fill it with water, label the date with a grease pencil, stash it in the back of the basement, and forget about it.

Chlorine. Ammonia. My local fire department has the locations and specs for all such nasties. Many years ago, chlorine leaked and the local police set up roadblocks. In another case, some nitwit launched a flare that landed on a meat packing plant. They had an ammonia refrigerator. One squad of...

Anyone remember wire saws, 40+ years ago, that cut?

Well, yes, they are awful, except for the sharp one. Even so, I carried one for years solely to cut splints. At the time, I was living in an arid area with no down and dead wood; there was no need for a firewood-gathering tool. I was lampooned by my then-gf for carrying it. We're friends again...

What’s on your keyring (and do you use it?)

"if you're not always prepared, you're never prepared." the only necessary urban edc survival kit is a credit card and a smile. (And a smartphone that you buy with your credit card.) But that's no fun, is it? Fee image hosting is too much to find on a Friday evening. Words only: Ti peanut...

    Alpaca wool sleeping bag liner

I like my alpaca socks. My alpaca sweaters wear out too soon. Without some synthetic fiber in the mix, the alpaca yarn falls apart. Not dissing the idea of an alpaca liner, but try this: Merino wool liner.

    Chuck boxes

I use one of these, not necessarily from the linked manufacturer. I add a couple of 2m buckle straps sometimes. Small critter-proof, toss something waterproof over it if rain is likely, wash out every year or so.

Thanks for the link. Imgur for the future.

Scaled down to 640 px wide from 4,000. It's been through a few dips in de-rust solution over the decades. Note the barbs. This is three plies of barbed ribbon twisted together. Current Gigli/dehorning saws are various gauges of round wire woven together. Sharp tooth >> round bump.

Anyone remember wire saws, 40+ years ago, that cut?

Thanks for your reply. I thought I was a member, but nobody told me there was a secret handshake. I tried the little postcard. That's what rejected my URLs. I've been searching this site for photo upload rules, "640x480 jpg under 10 kB", or whatever. Photobucket put up a paywall. I left...

Anyone remember wire saws, 40+ years ago, that cut?

Thank you all for your responses. I have photos but B-IK isn't accepting my URLs for them. Text replies follow. Will post my pics when I figure out the tech. I have always carried the little coil saw only to prepare splints for wilderness first aid. Dead and down wood for fires requires only...

    Bushcraft Etiquette (resurrected)

If you are a couple, see item 23 about snoring and flatulence. We don't want to hear the beast with two backs. Items 4 and 17 are the same. Items 5 and 20 are the same. Items 15, 24, and 33 are one item. Item 32 applies _everywhere_. _Anyone_ can halt activity on a safety concern, rank or...

    Bushcraft Etiquette (resurrected)

I discovered "Burying beetles" this weekend. Don't know how they made their living before... Those little critters made the cathole a quivering, undulating, nightmarish sight. I don't worry anymore about nature dealing with feces.

Anyone remember wire saws, 40+ years ago, that cut?

Today's wire saws are rebranded Gigli surgical saws. Gigli saws are used to cut skullbone for brain surgery. They comprise three or four stainless steel wires wrapped and woven. They are easy to sterilize. They cut thin bone cleanly enough for surgery. They are mass produced and are therefore...

Is a psk really needed in the UK?

Greetings all, We all enjoy building kits. Do you folk on the Island really ever need a psk? I'm a bloody colonial. There are very few spots in the continental US where a PSK is of any use. Northern Canada, defined as away from the cities, Alaska, maybe. I'm not disrespecting PSKs. I just think...

    Cold-camp night footwear

Greetings, Cold-camping is well-covered here. In-camp footwear is well-covered here. My question is specific to my experience last weekend. Solo camp in remote forest. Overnight temperature -10C. More-than-adequate hammock/underquilt/bag system. Tarp prevented overnight first-snowfall from...

    Winter gloves not mitts

Silly question, but are you very sure your handwear fits properly? I like glove-mitts with a liner. However, if the liner is too thick it blocks circulation. Dachstein, yes, I love mine with Aleut-made (hand-me-down) leather cover mitts. Mitts and dexterity don't play well together, as you...

Tip to share: binding rolled items

Greetings, I was faced with two problems today. One problem was an untidy pile of my daughter's old nylon hose and tights, all with runs, that I saved over the years "because I might find a use for them someday." The other problem was a camo net and a couple of scrim scarves that wouldn't stay...

    Biltong

...Started to snip but entire post is valuable. ... "bad quality". Translation issue? ="rotting"? We don't like that song from the 80s? Ugly fish? Honor the old folks knowledge. (Except when they are wrong.)
