    Tree bast projects

Thank you both. Very helpful advice re- drying/dampening before spinning. It looks like a fairly rough material will result-lots of work for something uncomfortable close to the skin. I think there's more potential as waterproof/quick-drying outer wear, which there's more evidence for too...

    Tree bast projects

I'm trying to research the potential for tree bast clothing in Palaeolithic/mesolithic. Although there's very little archaeologically, there is some indication that tree basts may have been used. Most likely for cloaks/ hats but I'm wandering whether tree basts can be be made soft enough for...

Hello all! : I'm just starting a project on tree basts. If you have any info or photos you'd like to share please comment/message me. I'm particularly interested in the range of species people have used, any differences found in bast properties and the range of products made. But really...

Hi Coldfeet If no-one living closer to you replies, I'd be interested in the duvet only. This would be if you were happy with hermes (couriers) collecting it from you? (and assuming it weighs less than 15kg...) Maybe wait to see if any else wants the whole set? Best wishes Nicola

I was lucky enough to do a weekend course under his tuition. He had the most amazing memory

    RIP Oliver Rackham

Oliver Rackham sadly passed away on the 12th Feb. A great scholar who's works have been essential and inspirational to the understanding and protection of our woodlands and environmental heritage.

Child Knife Use Age To Start

Mine started with cutting mushrooms (at home) when they were very little (2?) as you can use a butter knife. They progressed to sharper knives gradually based on their concentration. They each received their own knife when they cut their 1st adult tooth-a kind of right of passage

What knife/edge do you use when tanning a hide?

I've been using a bit of 6 inch plastic pipe for the beam- this is to flesh/grain on. I have an old blade which I've added bits of tubing as handles. I recommend 'Deerskins into Buckskins: How to Tan with Brain, Soap or Eggs' by Matt Richards- clear and informative.

    I've been robbed :(

In addition to looking around your neighbourhood, in case it was dumped, it's worth photocopying some posters and putting them up on lampposts. Use the eyes of your neighbours too! 99.9% of people are honest and friendly. It's a shame that the 0.1% happened to cycle past
