    Any old iron?

I've made a few in my back garden, one from a circular saw blade, 2 others from 01 tool steel, 2mm thick and the other 4mm. The good thing about circular saw blades is the area close to the teeth may be heat treated enough for you to be able to use it without having to HT again after it's...

Folder with just a knife and saw?

Do Victorinox still offer the option of making your own as part of the guided tour of the factory? IRRC they used to. Expensive knife unless you're looking for an excuse for a holiday in Switzerland ...

Folder with just a knife and saw?

I used to have the Joker model above. I think it was more intended for hunting as the saw didn't work well for wood but was really suited for cutting bone. It was especially poor cutting green wood and clogged quickly even going through inch thick hazle.

    Log Dancing Challenge, WinterMoot 2025

Well done Paddy. Asthma is often seen as a trivial thing as it's banded around so many people have it but it's no joke. in a previous job i used to get called to a colleague regularly who suffered from a severe asthma. On many occasions she would go to hosiptal, on some more drastic action was...

    Blood Transfusions

The other thing is, even if it's possible and it benefits the patient (far from certain) they wont instantly be 100% . Nor will the donor. Therefore there will be 2 patients to care for in the field, both potentially critically ill.

    Deer deterrence

I'm not aware of smells or such that deer stay away from. the only thing i can think of is to offer something nice elsewhere to lure it away from the bits you want to keep!

    Log Dancing Challenge, WinterMoot 2025

Glad you're on the mend. As Wayne said they have the wizzy bits of kit to help that sort of wound heal better. Take it steady and no more log dancing - at least for a month!

    Leatherman Micra kydex sheath

No idea where to buy one I'm afraid. You could try making one? Kydex is easy to shape and quite forgiving in that if you get it wrong you can normally just reheat and have another go.

    Shamagh

personally i don't like shemaghs as i find there's both too much material and in the wrong places. I much prefer a cheche. Similar idea but better shaped as a rectangle instead of a square making wrapping round the head far easier and less bulky to use as a scarf.

    Just asking

A wet/ dry vacuum is one that can also suck up water as well as normal dust etc. Most are able to switch to blow rather than suck and i used it in that fashion to get the fire hot enough for the heat treating.

That's a good idea, use a donor blade

    Just asking

I would suggest giving it a go yourself. I have made knives using some stock 01 tool steel from Amazon in 2mm and 4mm thickness. Cut out and shaped with a grinder and sander. I heat treated the 2mm steel myself in the back garden using a wet/ dry vacum and a charcoal fire. Because the 4mm blade...

purpose of this configuration in daypacks?

It sounds like you are doing a similar thing but using a vest as the carry system instead of a pack. best of luck

purpose of this configuration in daypacks?

I have the 5.11 Rush 24 pack which is a similar design. I really like the organisation aspect of it. the fact i can get to any of my items (even at the bottom) without either having to unload most of the contents or delve my arm in to rummage around blindly makes things much easier IMO. when...

    handdrill technique question

Floating hands definitely can work well. I find it takes a bit to get my head around fingers facing up or down and which hand moves forward and which back! Once sorted though i agree it is a good technique to know. It is a bit more complicated and so for someone just learning hand drill is...
