It was something my control freak teacher said (he's not even my teacher - he teaches the other DT class) and I've seen pupils welding at A-level. That said, our class is quite big, so maybe that's why.
Edit: SurveyMonkey survey added (see first post)
Thanks for answering my questionnaire steven. I was thinking of making mine less bowl-shaped (partly because I can't think of a way to make it bowl shaped very evenly) but it'll probably be dished so your fire doesn't fall out!
I'll definitely have to think about a grate and vents - I can think...
Thanks Pignut!
Thanks for the offer Dougster. I'll have to ask for some help right now :P (My google-fu isn't quite good enough to find answers). Unfortunately we're not allowed to weld or braze at GCSE, so I'll have to use comparatively ugly bolts to hold it together. Can mild steel be beaten...
Mike,
My product will be a garden/patio fire tray for enjoying a fire without scorching or damaging the ground. It is for a garden, so does not necessarily need to be lightweight. It will look good and not obstruct your view of the fire. There may be points for a grid/stand for pots and pans, so...

Probably the cheapest one possible. This is more of a project to prototype a knife and practice the techniques. Then I'll probably make it properly in 01 steel.
I bought some 5mm thick stainless steel off the "Bay of E"
Straight away, you can probably see my problem.
It's too thick.
So how should I use it for the knife I want to make, with a blade length of 8cm? I want it to have a scandi grind because people seem to say it's easier to sharpen...
Here's a candle holder I carved using a set of scarily sharp chisels and gouges given to me by a very nice woodcarver called Ted Summerhayes.
It's made of Leylandii, sanded, and oiled with Danish oil.
I'm basically reiterating what others have said.
Mac for style, and for saying "I've got a mac"
Windows for gaming and (possibly) compatibility.
Linux for speed and cost.
Personally, I prefer both Linux and Mac to windows. I like Linux for the fact that it can be run from a USB stick...
