Hunting knife used as bushcraft knife?

Have 2 older Buck knives- a 110 Folding Hunter from 1967 and 119 Special from 1965 I think. Used both for hunting and camping for many years. The 110 I retired couple of years ago, replaced with a 110 Alaskan Guide version SV3 steel, rosewood handle, etc. The older one is a bit slimmer in the...

    Bushcraft v.s. Survival

If I voluntarily go out with a minimal kit for my own pleasure and enjoyment, it is bushcrafting , or woodcraft for us older types. If I end up outdoors with minimal equipment from an accident or emergency, and have to get by until things get better, it is survival. Same basic skills, same...

    Berkey travel filter

Just bought one of the Go Berky sets a couple of weeks ago, and used it in a hunting camp last week. It works well, but a few notes might help. First, the flow rate in the advertisement are based on keeping the chamber full all the time. Unless you can set there and refill it every 5-10...

my version of a leuku/ouuko combo

Very nice. Is the Leuku stainless steel ? Looks like it might be. If so, how do you like its edge retention ?

Best place to buy Moras at moment? (Miss Ebay)

Ragweed Forge is a good place to do business, have dealt with Ragnar several times. The laminated carbon mostly gives you a harder edge sandwiched into softer layers. Still needs to be cared for like normal carbon steel. The Mora laminates are good blades, IMHO.

    German Army pen knife

WWW.atlantacutlery.com in their latest catalog has these for $9.95 USD, described as German Military surplus. I have one of the Mauser marked knives and several of the military surplus just marked "rustfrei"- all serve very well.

    Fishing knife/saw

I have had and used this Carl Schlieper two blade knife for years. Had another with the plain yellow plastic scales for years, broke the tip on it , and got this one. Non locking, fine real saw:

    Tool for identifying plant/insects etc

Those digital microscopes are neat. I would suggest looking at knife edges, and comparing really sharp to "not so sharp" and to dull edges. The contrasts, and ability to see rolled edges, striations and degree of polish are quite interesting. Looking at bark and fibers could open a whole new...

    Why should I carry a multitool ?

Have carried one since the original Leatherman tool came out. I use it a lot around camp, just for handling hot pots, etc. Also, seem to use it frequently to make some bit or other out of wire- often a tag bit if barbed wire . Fence rows often have a few coils laying about rusting where the...

forging axe and hewing log cabin video

We still have a few pioneer era log cabins at parks and museums here in Texas. Most use a form of angled notch that gives some interlocking effect. They are all quite small to eyes accustomed t modern homes, but they are quite weatherproof, and the insulative effect of the thick log walls was a...

    First knife

My first knife was a small carnival prize, about age 3. My first _real_ knife was a bone handles scout utility knife when I was about 7 , in Cub Scouts. By the time I was 10 I had a sheath knife- a 5 inch bowie style that I found, and Grandfather helped me rehandle. Since I was camping with Dad...

What are people wearing/doing to camoflage themselves when stalking and tracking

I use neutral colored clothing, a plaid Pendleton shirt for preference. Gloves, a stocking cap, a mosquito headnet to cover face and hands and old bald head <g>. Deer seem to see more a B/W vision than color, so much "camoflage" is wasted effort for hunting. The key to stalking is wind/ scent...

Deer Stalking - Book recommendations please

Google books has some very interesting ebook versions of 1880-1900 era books on Deer Stalking. Google "Deer Stalking", "Deer Hunting" and "Still Hunting" and see what you find. If you like some of them, ABE Books or Amazon may put you onto a hard copy version.

    Bit of advice wanted.

For regular trips a poncho is a good thing to have, but for a one off trial camp out, you might just get a couple of large contractor grade trash bags. These can be cut to provide arm and head holes allowing wear as a poncho. Also good as an emergency cover for gear / rucksack/ sleeping bag if it...
