    Midge proofing the baby...

I swear by Smidge. It is Deet free and according to the web site is safe for children. Like all bug sprays some work for an individual and some don't. I got a free sample last year and found that one application lasted a good few hours, maybe worth a try, the website is -...

The Ultimate "What is this Fungi?" thread.

Geoff, thank you very much for your investigative work, I had a look the link to the ABFG. My little fungi seem to have provoked a good deal of discussion! My main concern is the health of the tree, or trees if it causes damage. Thanks again Jim

The Ultimate "What is this Fungi?" thread.

Can anyone ID these little chappies for me please? They were found growing on an old Alder tree in Glencoe on the 22nd January. For scale, I can hug the tree and clasp my hands! They looked "slippery" but felt firm to the touch. There were a great number of similar looking but much smaller...

    Campfire music

Marc, its an old Hohner I use. It was given to me by an old gent in a pub in Aberfeldy after I wandered in to a jamming session with a cheap parrot moothie. I think you picked the easiest key in "C". I have tried playing others in different keys but cant seem to master it. My best advice is to...

    Campfire music

Sitting in my favourite spot in Glencoe playing my harmonica, think I scared the wildlife off! Does anyone else play the mouth organ while bumming about camp? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxh5NnZfToQ

    Sutherland

Yes I think I know what you mean Highbinder. The clouds are certainly an integral part of the overall composition, I still don't like the fact that I cut of that little summit either, it drew the eye. Interesting photo for commenting on though! Jim

    Sutherland

Hi Neil, thats a nice photo. I wish I knew more about photo editing but I did have a quick play about with your pic in photoshop. I tried to bring out more detail on the cliff and in the clouds. Then I applied the rule of thirds - that brought the focus of attention to the cliff and made the...

    Flashgun / remote trigger ?

Nagual, I know next to hee haw about this but I read somewhere that my Fuji HS10 (bridge camera) cant just take any old flash in the shoe. There is a possibility that the wrong voltage or current running across the shoe contacts can fry the camera with horrible consequences! Maybe worth checking...

    Wildlife at the Red Squirrel

While the rest of the country was covered in snow, I was camping in Glencoe. There was only a light dusting of snow on the ground but the temperature at night dropped to -9 which was nice, the stars were out and the campfire really comes in to its own! there was very little in the way of...

    Glencoe Revisited

Not met her but did bump into Jimmy Saville in the Clachaig once and Hamish Macinnes in the gift shop cafe!

Haha East coaster that tent generates more comments than any other I have! It looks like it should be on the set of a harry potter movie but boy is it warm. I had it in Glencoe for 5 days when it was constantly raining with high gusting winds and it stood its ground, super stable and water...

    Glencoe Revisited

Its one of the few campsites around which allows campfires, albeit in pre-determined spots, usually in little gulley's or spots where a tent cant be pitched. It is fairly basic but because of its locale and lots of trees around (they allow tarps & hammocks) its an ideal alternative if I don't...

    Glencoe Revisited

Just back from a few days up in Glencoe again. This time it rained - for 4 days solid! I try and get up to Glencoe at least once a month, its my favourite place, but this time the weather was really foul! Still - as they say, skin is waterproof! In the morning my campfire site looked...

I'm going to the Edinburgh one on Sunday, was at the event last year and it was very entertaining so looking forward to this one.

A Few Photos in and Around Glencoe.

This is my latest tent, it has a personality of its own! (ok so it looks like it should be in a Harry Potter film!) My typical setup - tarp for the fire, cook tent which is an old utility tent and my sleeping quarters The road to the campsite, the leaves are beginning to fall...

    Fuji Finepix HS10

That looks like my mother in law hehehe :) Excellent photo though, it would have been nigh on impossible to take that shot without a large zoom lens I think.

    Fuji Finepix HS10

Just following on from the zoom capability of the hs10, here are 3 pics taken from my front door. The first is 1X zoom, then about 10X then finally 30X. The results I think look pretty good and certainly good enough to shoot wildlife without it darting off when I come lumbering by!

    Fuji Finepix HS10

Yeah UltimateSurvivor, its a great piece of kit, but the learning curve is quite steep! I have an old Samsung 8Mp compact and the difference is unbelievable! The only problem I have come across so far - and its not really a problem as such, just a niggle - when I change to RAW+JPG setting, it is...
