What wildlife did you spot today?

a small swarm of native bees about 8ft above the ground (their nest is attached to the side of a coconut palm and smaller than my head): their activities were enough to stir the leaves on the ground

    Fire steel.

i haven't found any tree funghi around here which work, so my go-to tinder is charred punkwood. unlike some guys on youtube i only char one end instead the whole piece as it makes it easier to hold (tinder on top of flint, downwards strike with steel) because it's less fragile + i can get...

What Wildlife do you see Every Day?

several species of poison dart frogs and canetoads (bufo marinus, it's part of their natural range around here )

    Fire steel.

flint and steel is my preferred method to start my daily cooking fire (the inly ferro rod i regrettably bought has been chucked away long, long time ago because of it's UNreliablity (it came from a swedish company daring to misname their product "firesteel"...)) -- my striker is a broken piece...

    Life without Single Use

due to a VERY limited budget i'm surviving on rice and beans (can you spell :vomit::vomit: ?!), but i'm recycling the bags (and whatever other packaging i can't avoid),the rice i buy in 10kg bags which come in handy for a lot of things and the twine holding the bags closed makes good sewing...

What wildlife did you spot today?

friday i had a land crab walking straight into my kitchen (i didn't invite it for soup ), saturday i saw another northern tamandua in broad daylight (they're usual more nocturnal...) climbing up a tree, yesterday i almost stepped on a female iguana saturday morning i said "goodbye" to 'my' four...

What wildlife did you spot today?

i like your way of thinking.... (now i've to go back in the jungle and try to find it again... :P ) currently the tarantula wasps are busy dragging stunned spiders across my (gravel) floor and on my way to 'the office' i almost stepped on a mica (=non-venomous snake)

What wildlife did you spot today?

this morning i opened the chicken coop to find another chook missing: the culprit from two weeks ago was back and managed to get in despite closing last time's entrance... .unlike last time it didn't get out again, so i found myself dragging a p***ed- off 6ft boa constrictor out of a nesting box...

What wildlife did you spot today?

been out checking my trail cameras again, but but had a malfunction, so no videos (and some rough walking for nothing...)... i did however come across a northern tamandua (tamandua mexicana) which i didn't see for years, so i'm excited... they only eat insects but have strong claws so don't get...

Withdrawn Hudsons Bay Tin with Lens

in this case i'd be curious about a tutorial... brass (probably) won't work well in "my" obscene tropical humidity, but aluminium or stainless steel should do for a tinderbox (without the lens in the lid)...

Latvia tells citizens how to spot Russian spies

buildings around here don't have numbers, except a bunch of houses in the nearby village (supposedly for sla... eerrhh... workers for the banana mafia) which have 3digit 00 numbers... 007 had for a while a lot of cops hanging around... not sure if that story is true, but i remember reading...

What wildlife did you spot today?

the puppies (see my previous posts) are growing and doing well :-) this morning one of our chooks was missing when i opened the coop and no trace of an intruder... the mystery was solved when i saw a ca. 5ft long boa with a suspicions lump outside...(despite my local reputation the boa wasn't...

What wildlife did you spot today?

that looks like a non-venomous species?! last night i encountered a fer-de-lance on the footpath and dispatched it about 4m from the puppies' nighttime box... .it was about 4ft long and tasted great :P ; today's only encounter was a male basilisk (a.k.a. "jesus christ lizard" as they can run on...

What wildlife did you spot today?

i still miss her (5years in august she went missing), i had folks asking me for years afterwards what happened to her but never found out... in 2012 i rescued a puppy in south korea from ending in a soup pot (i came too late for her two siblings but later pointed the bone (==a form of...

What wildlife did you spot today?

two day ago i saw my first juvenile neotropical otter, which is even more surprising given the fact that the river is higher than usual again... four weeks ago i had a different animal encounter: i was on my way to my WiFi spot when i found a bag in our entrance. i picked it up thinking someone...
