Looking at the map..each person walked in multiple circles..and I could be wrong..but by the look of the GPS tracking they did veer off the same way each time.

A friend of mine who is into Open Water Swimming said "It’s the same with open water swimming, if you have nothing to sight off, you tend veer off course.."

Just read an interesting article... Interesting article 'Walking in circles' 'Did you know that people who are blindfolded will tend to walk in circles? No one completely understands why human beings do this. If someone is blindfolded or disoriented or even lost in unfamiliar territory...

I also noted that you shouldn't stick to just one method of natural navigation..especially if you aren't sure that the star you have chosen is giving you a reliable indication of direction. Choosing more than one star in different parts of the sky is also an option.
