Close encounter of the cute kind

Thanks @Robson Valley , there's a sandy patch by the stream where they seem to like to cross that's usually got tracks, I don't normally bother brushing out old tracks though as I only go down there once a fortnight or so. Interesting to hear their creatures of habit, I know foxes like to keep...

Close encounter of the cute kind

Had a magical moment on a recent visit to the woods, a fawn popped out the hedge only a few yards from where I was packing up ready to leave - it bolted as soon as it saw me, but as I watched it go it slowed and seemed intrigued by the cold camp fire ring nearby so I took the opportunity to nab...

    Building a Shepherd's Hut

@Broch Could I ask that you do tester of 50/50 creosote and linseed oil / danish oil or whatever you can spare please? - I stumbled upon several mentions of 'boat soup' whilst reading up on waxed canvases and creosote might be a useful alternative to pine tar in recipes for outdoor rather than...

    ash dieback

I noticed today that a fair few of the ash trees on my permission have bare branches but I can't see any definite sign of ADB. Good to read that there's no need to remove infected trees and the timbers still useable when the time comes.

Have you considered creosote?. A dark colour and decent protection, it's a bit smelly to begin with but when you consider modern tanalising for timber is almost worthless it might be an option..

    Best budget camping axe?

If your after value for money you can't beat the Bacho hand axe. Sure it's cast rather than forged but it does the job well, I payed about £15 for mine at the local farm shop. I use it for light snedding and occasional firewood but with a regrind apparently it can make a decent enough wood...

    Waxed fabrics - cotton alternatives

@Lean'n'mean I hadn't thought of hot bottoms melting the wax, maybe a waxed version for winter and a plain version for summer use is the way to go By native fibres I just ment anything but cotton - flax and hemp realistically but I'm sure nettles, brambles and a whole host of other plants could...

    Waxed fabrics - cotton alternatives

Evening all, I'm planning on making my own waxed fabric and was wondering if anybody knows how heavy duty linen or hemp canvas would stand up to treatment with linseed oil and beeswax?. The fabrics will be used to make a couple of stool tops, a pair of chaps and maybe even a large tarp. I've...

    Building a Shepherd's Hut

I have a friend with an Alaskan sawmill who initially offered to plank up any decent sized logs, but after I described my woods (steep and difficult to access) he now applauds my decision to only use hand tools and man power with undisguised relief.. I looking to take a round wood framing...

    Building a Shepherd's Hut

Any idea how much of the timber will be your own and how much will be bought Broch?. Love the 'build chassis, add wheels and axle' approach, might have to borrow that.. As far as I know caravans for seasonal workers are allowed in woodlands under planning law as they're not a permanent building

    Austism spectrum

Your in good company @swotty I'm damn sure I'm on the spectrum and my cousin definitely is, but then my uncle has every train ticket he's ever bought in shoe boxes in the loft, so it was kinda expected... Just like depression, the more you talk about it the more you realize your not the only...
