I'm nurturing a small patch of these in my garden. You've reminded me to go check on them. My understanding is that, being in the buttercup/ ranunculacae family, the tubers contain the toxin ranunculin which is removed during cooking.
Edit: yep, they've appeared.
I'd be willing to pay tax for the state to manage land for my benefit. Equally, I'd be willing to pay fees for usage of private land, e.g. for wild camping, mountain biking and so forth, so long as it is clearly coupled to upkeep of the land. I'd rather pay a fee than sneak around hoping not to...
Another point which I think hasn't yet been made. It is possible to be land 'rich' but cash poor. It's too easy to stuff people into categories and boxes and assume that anyone with land is a wealthy aristocrat who has inherited all they have.
If you look on a map at the area of Dartmoor in question, and then zoom out, you see just what a tiny fraction of land it is that people are fighting over. I know to an extent that it is symbolic, but I find it quite depressing.
Which goes to show it isn't an issue of who owns the land. It's an issue of conflict of a whole variety of different interests, and the rules and regulations governing what can and can't be done on land.
If by maintain you mean pick up people's rubbish then no, absolutely no land owner should have to do that.
But if you mean maintain woodland to a certain standard, from an ecological and conservation point of view, and provide a degree of access, I don't think that's so far fetched. Any...
I agree with what you're saying here. You raise some interesting points.
If the landowner's concerns relate to damage to the environment, it seems odd to go after wild camping though. After all, if you're out in the moors for the day, does it make that much difference if you stay out until the...
That about sums it up for me.
I'm not completely sure that this issue is really about environmental damage though. We all take a toll on the land whether we are public users (ramblers, campers, dog walkers etc) or landowners and farmers - I suppose exceptions being those managing land with a...
This Screwfix axe seems like a great recommendation and great value. I'm not experienced with axes so please forgive the noob questions...but would this class as a splitting axe or a chopping axe? Or a mix of both? I've got a fiskars chopping axe which is great, but I like the idea of something...
Yes, it looks in principle similar to the swiss army trangia. The issues I've had with these sorts of setups have been overheating of the meths resulting in huge flames. I'll see how it goes! I can't look at a tin can without reimagining it as some sort of stove these days.
I got the unlined Austrian ones as I have plenty of well insulated gloves for them to go over. I could have spent a fortune some Montane mittens or other brands but these look every bit as good. I look forward to testing them out.
Thought I'd share this. Seems like a neat design. I was going to try making a caldera cone but think I might give this a go instead.

I just received a pair of those Austrian army mittens, having ordered from surplus and outdoor. For 9.99 it is pretty amazing value, and they seem to be of excellent quality. I'm chuffed!
That sounds great. I'm based in East Anglia and have only managed day trips with the canoe. They invariably leave me wanting more adventure. I'd love to do a multi day canoe trip. I will check him out. Thanks for posting the review.
Sounds amazing! I had few days in Finland over Christmas period, although nothing as exciting as what you have planned. It did give me a chance to check out some clothing systems in dry cold and snow. Not an environment I'm very familiar with.
This was at night:
I did get to make my first...
