    Few flowered leak

I found treasure! A patch of few flowered leak Allium paradoxum not far away. Would have preferred wild garlic, but I'll settle for this. Not much Allium around me.

    Carving axe

Robson Valley, John Elstob, thank you for the advice, I appreciate it. I'll check out those links. I do have a spoon knife, no wounds as yet, but your advice is noted. The only time I've ever cut myself with a knife was when trying to remove amadou from a horse's hoof fungus. Amazing the amount...

    Carving axe

Thanks everyone. Actually yes, I do have a mora spoon carving knife, forgot to mention that Broch, that restoration looks wonderful. So you have your own kiln? I'll take a look at my homebase axe tomorrow and have a think about what I can do with it. I think I'd likely be limited to flattening...

    Carving axe

I'd like to get into carving. I have limited tools (a couple of knives, a cheap 'smallish' axe from homebase and a fiskars splitting axe), even less knowledge and zero skill. Nor do I have much space. But I have great ambitions. So I need a small carving axe. What would people here recommend...

Plant recognition apps not as reliable as we might hope......

There's only so much you can mitigate for lack of common sense. I've even seen respected YouTubers confuse gorse with broom and white dead nettle for stinging nettle.

Plant recognition apps not as reliable as we might hope......

Came across my favourite patch of poison hemlock on my lunchtime walk today and thought I'd test the plant net app. Based on a photo of the leaves, it came up with 25 percent probability of it being poison hemlock (conium maculatum). But I think it's a tough ask. It illustrates that you need to...

    Travel cloak

Well I've learnt stuff I didn't know I wanted to know on this thread. I love it.

Plant recognition apps not as reliable as we might hope......

Plant net has been a great help in my plant I.D journey. It gives me pointers and ideas, which I can then fully confirm in books or elsewhere on the web. It provides something of a shortcut, and being always short on time, I need this. Over time I've got a feel for when I can trust it and when...

    Yellow Wood Anenome

Could be yellow anemone Anemone ranunculoides. I would have thought it would contain toxin ranunculin as with other anemone species.

    What did you buy today?

One of those little square signalling mirrors off Amazon. I will be returning it.

    UK version of Alone.

I remember reading that in the episode with survival lilly her partner had his 'ferro rod' burned by a flying ember. Or am I imagining that? Seems phenomenally unlucky if true.

    101 tips for Winter Camping

I had a cracking couple of days on kinder scout in the peak District last week. Got loads of navigation practice in and honed my pacings and timings. Temperature was around freezing but with significant wind chill. Probably doesn't count as winter for many people on the forum. But I learnt the...

    Navigation recommendations-UK centric options.

I use two apps on a smartphone. I've personally never felt the need for a dedicated GPS unit. I have the ordnance survey app on my phone, although I don't use it because I always have a paper OS map. But I also use an app called locus maps. I have locus maps classic, before it became a...

    Wood burners in the news

Interesting, thanks for the link. I think that's a pretty good way of putting it. I think that's what bugs me about the slew of recent articles - George Monbiot's articles included. They seem emotive rather than factual. I'm all for being considerate of neighbours and I'm all for discusssing...

    Wood burners in the news

Thank you all for the responses, a lot of food for thought. I have a stove, that really, I don't need. The house just doesn't need it. But then I only run it maybe four or five times a year, on particualrly cold days. I've always figured that everything we do in life has an environmental impact...

    Wood burners in the news

Hi everyone. There have been many articles recently (in the guardian at least) on wood burner pollution. I'm interested to know what people's thoughts are on this. Are pollution concerns justified? I have no problem with discussions on pollution in the media, but I can't help thinking the issue...

Potential ban to wild camping on Dartmoor.

    Ok, some interesting points.

Potential ban to wild camping on Dartmoor.

I have to say I'd hate to be in the position of anyone having to ervict a tresspasser from their land who has refused to leave. Use of reasonable force, in practice, is no simple thing, with risk of being assaulted or ending up committing assault. Just to be absolutely clear, I'm not condoning...

Potential ban to wild camping on Dartmoor.

I don't think you'd get carted away unless you were committing or intending to commit criminal damage. The police don't have the power to do move you on.

    Magic of mushrooms

Indeed. Some nice photography otherwise. I did enjoy the oyster mushroom snaring a nematode.
