How to safely have a fire on/in peaty ground?

A couple of buddies and I hiked around Glenn Affric in May We used an established firepit at one site. Took us over 40 filled and chain passed Mors Pots (1.8L) before we felt it was truly out. Best way Don't do it

Bushcraft shelters in winter - no tent/sleeping bag

The most effective shelter I've used in winter was a three man shelter lean to. One side was open for getting in and out the other three sides were the insulated bed area, raised off the ground and padded with debris. A fire ran centrally, as it was a group shelter at least one of us would wake...

    Restoration/refurbishment of split cane rod

This was my grandfather's rod. It holds a special place in my heart, it's practically a time machine as this is the rod he gave me to learn with, taught me where I was wrong and generally introduced me to coarse fishing. I'd dearly love to take it out again and use it. This said, it's old, some...

    UK version of Alone.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, guess unless you've been involved in the season or know a participant you'll never know. I hope you enjoy the free hour between 21:00-22:00hrs tonight, I'll enjoy watching something different on tv to the norm then play the mental game of what if.

    UK version of Alone.

For someone who hasn't watched it you certainly know a lot about it. As for the food, they list it in the choices they take, previous participants Nicole Apelian and Karie Lee both mention their food rations and the reasoning they took it.

    UK version of Alone.

I'm glad you hold that opinion Especially when I can categorically state that it's in the hands of the producers who use the self filmed footage. All TV if filmed and edited is reality TV. Is it beyond the control of the participants how they are portrayed by the production team?Yes Is it...

    UK version of Alone.

I can testify that it's hard graft. A good friend took part and they said the filming added massively to the work load. They're expected to film constantly to provide footage. Unfortunately they have no say in how the footage is used which is where the producers tweak for drama and so on.

    UK version of Alone.

They travelled to Canada to film it I believe. The participants are all from the UK. How exactly does having proper safety measures to ensure that no one dies make it staged? Whilst a lot of the contestants add weight which is a sensible tactic, for most the added padding rapidly gets lost as...

    Lessons for the Children

Something that happened last night got me thinking. Setting the scene, it's 23:40, I'm just drifting off, daughter calls me- can you pick me up from trainstation (30min drive away) the next train home is two hours before it leaves. Dutifully I get up, dress, drive there, sit and wait for twenty...

    Lessons for the Children

Grandads should help grandchildren get upto mischief they haven't thought of yet. My grandad was a massive influence on my passion for the outdoors. Re the willpower, I'm still learning this myself

    Lessons for the Children

Not just uni, I had to work that all out on my Tod! I'm trying to help both kids learn budgeting and the merits of saving some of their money as they go along. Also the concept of doing work before the last minute to save on stress/worry/pressure so homeworks encouraged to be done as soon as...

    Lessons for the Children

I started pocket money with Jake around ten. Unconditionally to begin with, now that he's twelve there's a few conditions to ensure it -no plates/glasses left in room, room tidy, bin emptied once a week. Nothing strenuous and also importantly nothing related to his performance at school, I feel...
