there seem indeed several makers for them, the one i got issued was brandnew and made by victorinox-- which meant it sadly got lost as soon as i found out :P i only wished they'd skipped the bottle opener and made the saw full length...
tyres have been used in the past to make sandals (Ho Chi Minh sandals and huaraches f.i.) but modern tyres have steel wires in them, which makes them tricky to cut...
reminds me of a quote i found somewhere: "the surest sign that intelligent life exists somewhere else in the universe is that nobody has tried to contact us (yet)"
normally they're (more) nocturnal, but lately there's a lot of nine-banded armadillos out in broad daylight, one of them walked almost over my toes a few days ago without feeling concerned...
yesterday afternoon i had a 5ft. boa stretched out across the (dirt) road at a nearby place: they're not...
hmmm... i saw plenty of mistletoe on oaks in south korea in 2010....
isn't mistletoe also one of the ingredients of the magic potion brewed by Getafix (=the druid in the "Asterix" cartoons) :-) ?

to keep in line with the subject...
me neither...
there's a long list of famous people through history who had beards, i know at least of three named for their facial hair (=Friedrich I / Barbarossa, Sven Forkbeard, Edward Teach / Blackbeard)
i lost the lid of my "zebra" billy about 7years ago in a flood (and use a cheap stainless steel plate as replacement since then -- works, but not perfect...): i've a piece of thin stainless steel, so i'll have a go on making a better lid following your instructions soon :-)
sorry for my late reply as our internet is in "mañana" mode lately....
my drills are about as long as my arm (=from armpit to tip of my hands) when i start; i already spit on my hands to reduce blisters.... .part of the problem might be our obscene tropical humidity....
bow drill fire starting is absolutely no deal for me, but sadly i'm struggling with the hand drill (i DID have success with hibiscus tiliaceus in northern Australia and limited success with cacao over here) . my main problem is that my hands get too hot no matter what i try and i end up with...
