    Chris's trying out leatherwork thread

If you get into it - making sheaths - try the next step : A Stitchless Sheath That link is a really good tutorial - even I managed to make one :)

Linen vs Synthetic thread for leather

Linen thread heavily waxed, tightly sewn into a sunken stitch line using saddle stitch. Then more wax rubbed into the finished stitch line, finally gently hammered flat with a polished hammer. But better to do this after wet forming and before any dyeing or finish work.

Quick review: Thermarest Neoloft sleeping pad.

It is a luxury, but an investment in my eyes. Hopefully it will outlast my camping days. Two straps seems to work. I suppose that one strap could get displaced during nocturnal side changes etc but this double strap worked in lounge testing and real tent use.

Quick review: Thermarest Neoloft sleeping pad.

A quick review of the Thermarest Neoloft sleeping pad, as mooted by @TeeDee. I wont go into data and stats here, as they are available all over the web. As I’m older now - in my mid 60’s - I’ve done fewer motorcycle rallies over the past few years as I’m not sleeping that well on my original...

Looking for thread to stitch Leather

If you sew a lot, make yourself an Inuit thimble from a scrap of thickish leather. E.g Linky

    Smoke control zones

While an open fire is really nice, they are quite inefficient in their use of wood and coal, and need careful management to get a modicum of heat produced. We had and enjoyed an open fire for the first few years at our home, but last year we had a multi fuel stove put in. It has been surprising...

Walnut surplus! What do I do with it?

Perhaps pickle some for later consumption? Beware though, the husks produce a strong natural dye which works equally as well on hands/skin as it does on leather and the like.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Remember to claim back a flushing allowance from Wessex Water, if you’re on a water meter - usually a fiver I think off your bill. We’ve done it a few times due to water interruptions since we moved to the SW. See: Linky

    What did you buy today?

It seems like it. I bought it IRL - a bricks & mortar shop called Taunton Leisure. They told me that the mat has a 3-year warranty and that they’ve never had any of the few claims for Thermarest rejected. I’ve been using an original self inflating Thermarest for 20+ years, and it’s still good...

    What did you buy today?

A Thermarest Neoloft sleeping mat. Seems like good quality, easy to inflate/deflate, comfortable and quite small/light. I’ll use it in a few weeks time.

    Air pillows with strap(s) ?

Hi All, does anyone have a recommendation for air/inflatable pillows, and particularly those fitted with strap/straps which hold the pillow in place on a sleep mat? If I can’t get one with a strap I’m not against making myself a pillowcase with a strap built in. TIA, Bob

Got a bit of gleaning in today (oooohh, my back!)

No. We’re fortunate that we have some cool dry dark places to store them. We will separate them roughly by size, then let them dry off a little under newspapers to exclude the light. Then we will check them for sound condition and layer them either in paper potato sacks or net sacks, and move...

Got a bit of gleaning in today (oooohh, my back!)

Got a call from one of my village farmer friends last night. His potato field had been harvested, and he said I could do some gleaning if I liked. I thanked him kindly and put out my old clothes to go and have a look today. When I first looked round the field there were plenty of smaller spuds...

    From This to This…

The wife and I adopted one of our village’s road junctions (green triangle) a while back. It went from this: To this: ..and it eventually looked like this: We keep it tidy and trim the tree when necessary.

    Modern car technology

Indeed I do mean motorcyclists. There have already been quite a few accidents, some fatal, in the States where a motorcycle with twin rear bulbs/lights has been mistaken for a distant car by some autonomous vehicles.

    Modern car technology

I can’t remember the details but self driving cars become legal next year in taxi etc guises, and then more classes of road vehicle in 2037. It makes me, as a biker, very nervous !

    Your picture of the day...

To me it’ll always be an ‘umu’, from time in Tonga and the Cook Islands. Truly paradise :)
