    WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

I made a tool basket over the bank holiday. 9" round at the base, sides vary between 6" and 10". Handle is a chunky piece of hazel I had from the hedge last year. The basket is intended for carrying garden tools and stuff about in. Although could be used as a large lunch basket! GC

    From This to This…

..........If not then get the cardboard sheet [or other mulch/light barrier] down quick before it rains and the weeds regrow....... Otherwise you will become really good mates with that strimmer. GC

    Coil basket and backpack

The straps go through the wales at top and bottom- loop on the inside, each strap is a single piece of leather with a buckle. The wales were put on to make those parts of the backpack strong enough to cope. I am planning to use one of my old external framed backpacks to make a backpack-basket...

    Coil basket and backpack

I have been on some more basketry courses.... week before last was a backpack, week just gone was a coil basket course. I have a sfot spot for th ePolish asymmetric border so have been playing a bit with it on these courses. Slowly improving..... it's very therapeutic. Still have...

    Modern car technology

I have mixed thoughts about the "assist" functions and electric gadgets. In some conditions they cope pretty well and are useful..... but not in anything like all conditions. They also vary consideably between manufacturers. There's 2 vehicles I drive regularly- a Ford Focus and a work...

'Razor sharp out of the box'

All the puukkos made in Finland that I have obtained have been proper sharp out the box, same with any Terava or Mora blade. A quick strop is about all they might want. So it can be done...... GC

    Flares.

When my dad was a MRT member back in the 1980s, they carried smoke flares that were used to indicate wind direction to any supporting helicopter. I guess this is the "position and direction" thing. GC

    Work Boots

Composite toecap and midsole protection are lighter and your feet don't get as cold in winter..... I have a couple of pairs of Cat safety boots for work: a heavy duty pair for ballast yomping (do rather less of that these days thankfully ) and a lighter smarter pair more suited to auditing on...

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Wondering today. How folks would cope with the grief of change if they suddenly lost access to the way they have been living their life for decades..... What has provoked this is a bit of a difficult week. Lost one of our 3 cats to a sudden illness- by the time he showed symptoms it was too...

What did the Pandemic do for you ?

Be interesting so see if it works when phone is used over wi-fi..... :D I disabled it on my old phone, but i may leave it on just to see whether it works over wi-fi via Starlink. Not holding my breath, quite a bit of the 2-factor authentication systems don't work over wi-fi calling so...

    What did you buy today?

Brisa Crafter knife. Small fine blade, just the job for finer work, better than expected. Fills the gap between a puukko size knife and a carving knife. GC

    What did you buy today?

I am fitting a drain valve to the tank bung hole, and it will sit where I can just open the valve to empty it..... so it can easily be emptied and refilled every day or two, which is apparently the best way to avoid the stink. Also helps keeps the water clean for plant watering (dip tanks are so...

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Of course, that's all back to defining a "prepper" vs being prepared in the "Be Prepared" Scouts' motto type of way. The book "Survival of the RIchest: Escape strategies of tech billionaires" by Douglas Rushkoff is an interesting insight into the minds of the extreme "preppers." These people...

    What did you buy today?

I have a large pond further up the garden and no mozzies yet. This is midge country not mozzie land. We also have bats, swallows and swifts. So much standing water around here, another tank ain't going to make any difference. GC

    What did you buy today?

A 6-foot galvanised cattle water trough..... .....For soaking brown willow for weaving, obviously  Put it near a downpipe so I can put a diverter in and fill from rainwater run off, it will do secondary duty as a dip tank for garden watering. The location also puts the drain hole over a...

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Indeed. Although I wonder if that would have bee different when if became clear that "the authorities" were not going to come and clear your mess up any time soon.... I suspect there would still be a proportion of adult toddlers having tantrums about how hard done to they were, but in the end...

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Indeed. And composting loos easier in a rural area..... especially if one can burn the loo roll which is the otherwise difficult part of a composting loo. [When I had a composting loo in my camper van, for a no. 1, I had scraps of cloth that I used, then washed out, whereas for number 2's, the...

    Brewing coffee?

Not only can you get a metal filter, but also an end fitting that replaces the stock one ("flow control filter cap"), it is basically a one-way valve, so you can brew as long as you want and then push through. GC

    Portable, foldable saws

Lots of Silky saws... from the small Pocket boy, through Gomboy and Bigboy all they way up to the Katanaboy (who knew that folding saws could come so long!). You pays your money and takes your choice..... :D GC

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Indeed. My work in compliance tells me that most folk are indeed happy in their little groove, and woe betide anyone who wants to spoil that sense of comfort with some unpaltable facts! The higher up in the management heirarchy someone is, the less appetite for such facts in my experience (with...
