    Pack Sizes and 'Standard' Kit

My Equipment List. WHAT & WHY. .62 cal/20 gauge flintlock fusil. 42 inch barrel. Why? Large caliber smoothbore has a lot of knock down power with a round ball, very versatile using bird shot, buckshot, or round ball or a combination of any two of these, able to use other projectiles found in...

Interesting, I can't recall ever getting ticks when I lived in the UK, but that was a long time ago now. Keith.

Carrying an axe in the UK - In sight

I always carry my tomahawk & knives on my person where I can get at them if needed for self defence, but then I no longer live in the UK. The only axe I carry on my pack occasionally if I have heavier work to do is my half-axe. Take care & stay safe. Regards, Keith.

Death to Dandelions. The upside of staying put.

Well I have to admit that I encourage the growth of dandelions & nettles as a food source, one never knows when one may have to rely on them as the only food you have! Regards, Keith.

    Galvanized Raised Beds

I made our own using old roofing iron & pallets, roofing iron & posts, I cut up some old galvo water tanks, used two old dustbins for potatoes, & we are also using a couple of old 44 gallon drums. You might also consider sourcing some old above ground swimming pools. Regards, Keith.

Save money and protect the environment by repurposing your old outdoor gear Don’t let go of your favorite backpack—transform it.

Most hikers and campers have at least one torn and tattered piece of gear they refuse to let go. Those are the items that tell the stories of what we’ve seen, where we’ve been, and the muddy canyons and thorny bushes we’ve gone through to get there. But just because a beloved jacket or tent has...

    Land By The River

Maybe back in the day it was named a river TeeDee, there was more water flowing in it. Land changes such as housing or housing estates can change the course of water flow, so perhaps this has changed the amount of run off from rain that is entering your river. Anyway, like I said, I think you...

    Land By The River

Mate you are extremely lucky to have access to this water source, though I agree, it does look more like a creek than a river. It seems that the definition of a creek or river differs in different countries, I see no clear definition of either. River vs. Creek A river is a natural steam...

    Emergency grab bag with toddler

Well there was a time when I could have given you some ideas as to where to go, but I left the UK because it was changing such a lot, & it will be a lot different again now since I was living there. I hear that Scotland still has some wild places. I came to Australia, worked hard, long hours...

    Emergency grab bag with toddler

If there are two adults, then one carries the child, & the other carries the pack. If you are the only adult, then you are going to have to carry both in one way or another, UNLESS, you purchase a hiking trolley, or use a pram. There are some decent "off road" type prams/pushers with larger...

    Trade Kettle.

Thank you for the information Toddy, appreciated. I had not heard of the Falkirk Pot, so I looked it up. Reminds me more of a camp oven. Bit too heavy I guess to carry on foot :) Keith.

    Tools of the Trade.

My long gun is a fusil. I do not use the pistol for anything, but as an 18th century living historian & experimental archaeologist it is part of the equipment I need to carry. Keith.
