    Hornets?

The Asian hornet id information is here: http://www.nonnativespecies.org/alerts/index.cfm?id=4 The pdf file is too large to upload apparently. I can't make a judgement from those pictures, but if they are Asian hornets you really should report them. Z

Natural Colours - Wall Cave Art

From the Wikipedia entry for Cueva de las Manos: the mineral pigments include iron oxides, producing reds and purples; kaolin, producing white; natrojarosite, producing yellow; and manganese oxide, which makes black. A lot of these type of pigments can provide more than one colour because they...

    Fjallraven Greenland Wax

Stearin makes the wax harder. It keeps candles from bending at room temperature. You want your waterproofing wax to be soft so it is easier to rub on and so it stays flexible on the fabric. Z

Can anyone identify this animal sound please

Maybe a young muntjac in distress. The purring sound may be what's causing the distress! I have read that you can call in a muntjac by using a blade of grass between the thumbs to imitate the cry of the young. You may of course have recorded me practicing this! Z

It's that time of year again. Lighting the woodburner....

At this time of the year we often light the wood burner but then just let it go out as it gets too warm. My latest favourite method is flint and steel, amadou and a sulphur match. The match makes the transition from ember to flame much quicker and doesn't fill the room with smoke. Z

    Pressure stove.

Ah the roar of the paraffin! Makes me want bacon just listening to it. What make is the stove? Z

I'd like to be free of ad-ridden eyesore produced by the thieving miscreants at Tapatalk. Z

    Isuzu pickup canopy/rear cover

Is there an Isuzu pickup owners group on FB? In the Ford Ranger group there's often canopies up for grabs. Z

Antifreeze Probably too late to worry...

A friend of my mother had to call the AA because her car ground to a halt. The AA chap spotted the problem as soon as he opened the bonnet: ...she had forgotten to take the blanket off the engine that morning! Z

    What vehicle thread?

I have heard that because they don't use salt on the roads in Japan, they also don't apply underseal with the same degree of corrosion resistance. The advice was to get any import undersealed and waxoyled before its first UK winter. Z

    Map Geek

If you go on the British Geological Society website and find the geoindex map, you can bring up different layers of information. I agree with you that the false colours from the fourth dimension can be baffling, so my trick is to add a terrain layer called hillshade which makes the terrain look...

    Map Geek

Go have look at the National Library of Scotland map collections. http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/# If you're into maps I promise you will be there for hours. A recent name curiosity was "Deer Leap". Which was a kind of one way fence designed to allow deer into a forest, but not let them out. Z

That's the problem; a mile and a half isn't far enough to get clear of the busy-bodies! Z

Caravan or campervan / van conversion?

Caravans and campervans are not really designed for winter conditions. The main problem isn't the cold, it's condensation. I have done a few frosty/snowy nights in our caravan. You end up burning a lot of gas (it has to be propane for winter), and you will still have running wet walls. With...

    Rawhide Sheath

When i first saw this knife, my first thought was "Gotta be rawhide". That's an excellent functional sheath, although I can see how you might want to do it again. Does it have a wooden liner? I think rawhide is amazing stuff; like the kydex of the stone-age. Z
