More seedlings have gone I this weekend gone :) potatoes are starting to show in pots. Leeks are looking good, young peas have been planted out. Cabbage species have been ravaged by pigeons! First harvest of forced rhubarb made into a decent pot of jam :)

Probably one of the coolest things I've seen... a group of 6-8 brook lamprey breeding in a local stream.

Spotted plenty of cuckoo flower today, also known as mayflower.

'Being opportunistic and working with the natural world' I know thats vague but that sums up what I do. I try and let the seasons/weather dictate what I need to learn and focus on next, even then, I never go out with a strict plan because there's always something interesting to take opportunity...

I managed to catch my first wild brown trout of the season on my first trip of the year this evening, and in honour of its life I gave it a special send off in the form of a foraged dinner. Served with tempura style hog weed shoots (dried wild garlic in the batter) and pickled chanterelles...

Wood anemones are everywhere around here at the moment- lots of periwinkle too. The hogweed is throwing out shoots, and the jack by the hedge has really started to go for it. No flowers on the ramsons yet but plenty of buds.

I figured we could use a thread for the seasonal species and other interesting bits that happen throughout the year. For me today it was a walk on the moors, seeing lapwings and curlews that have come in from coastal regions to ground nest. Both make plenty of noise but watching the lapwings...

I would have said a granny knot or overhand knot describe a single piece of rope or line? When you say the start of shoe tying, then that would describe two ends of rope or line? As you say hardly a knot at all. Purely based on friction rather than being able to be cinched down properly...

Some yorkshire folk like to think they live in the far north.... We've had a decent lick of snow overnight :)

Had a week away on a canal boat last week and managed a bit of whittling :) This was from some lovely straight grained paper birch. It looked a very plain spoon before baking and painting! I burnished the bowl area but left the handle sharp to pick out the facets after a light coat of milk paint.
