    Larger carving axes?

Cheers Andy! I do really fancy a go at that! I think I'll have to pass and buy one for now though as my time is running a bit short, just managing to steal and hour here and there at the moment. Having said that I'll still go off and have a browse for axe heads.... :D

    Larger carving axes?

I've been doing a lot of carving over the past year, and I'm really getting into it. My Robin wood carving axe has been a solid tool to use, but I've been wanting of more weight and a longer cutting edge, so I'm considering the purchase of a larger carving axe. The first one that springs to...

    Two spalted cherry spoons

Thanks folks :) I've not had a go at a spatula yet. I need to though!

    Two spalted cherry spoons

The first one was a quick spoon... I'm not sold on the shape to be honest. The proportions don't feel right to me, but the wood is lovely. I do atleast like how the heart and sapwood separate out nicely. The 2nd spoon is a chunky little number, which had some tricky knotty grain in the bowl...

    Human Tent Pole

Isn't that what a bothy bag is? I'm sure you can get them for four people, each one sat in a corner as you say a human tent pole? Edit: quite a few on the market, search bothy bag...

    Upcycled knife sheath

I don't to be honest, I'm not a fan of dangley stuff! I'm sure the thinner strapping could be woven into a much larger sheath just like it can be done with birch bark if you require something for the belt though :)

    Upcycled knife sheath

I've been unhappy with the sheath on my mora 106 for a while now, it tends to fall off easily, it's kind of big and clunky too, which is ironic considering the quality of the knife itself- I was hoping to be able to harvest some decent amounts/lengths of birch bark to make a simple folded sheath...

To tent or not to tent that is the question.

Are you close to the car? Perhaps a big fishing Brolley/oval brolly or bivvy might work?

    Kuksa

Personally, I would say seasoned wood is probably littered with tiny fractures just waiting to pop. I've not carved a kuksa but I've had it happen with spoons from seasoned wood- cherry and birch. I'd try green wood if you can help it

    Asymmetrical pear spoon

This is the first spoon I've completed this winter, and from some radially cut pear that's been seasoned from last winter. It's the first time I've tried carving seasoned wood, definitely tougher, atleast on the knives, the axe seemed to lap it up though! My first asymmetrical design too. Hope...

    Favourite cooking setup

Full blown fires very rarely happen for me- I use a small hobo stove sometimes but most of the time cooking is on the trangia 25. Most meals get cooked as part of a rest on a walk or fishing trip so it works out pretty versatile, and I can use the same pots on the hobo stove. Need to try a...

The Ultimate "What is this Fungi?" thread.

Looks like a Russula species to me. The gills should flake like flaked almonds. The smaller one looks like a milkcap species.
