    Billy Cans

These are clones of the venerable Bulldog billies. I have a much-loved original set I got in a junk shop and love em. In fact I'm skeevy/cheap enough to use em in the kitchen most days -- no point in buying another saucepan to do the same job. The one slight downside is that the rim spun into...

    Help needed with oven please

Zinc oxide to be precise. I don't know if it was the same chap but the blacksmith Paw Paw Wilson died from complications from breathing galvy fumes. Wasn't a short or painless death either.

    Knives/Machetes Transportation

I understand the logic of why this thread exists and fair play for wanting to stay kosher with the police, but what an indictment on our country that it is needed in the first place.

    Help needed with oven please

You make some very good points Ian, and you seem to have a more in-depth knowleddge of ovens than I do. Surely though separating the fumes from the food is a good idea since it allows more margin for error in fire construction?

    Help needed with oven please

It seems to me that most ovens are/were built so the flames and fumes were kept seperate from the food -- for obvious reasons. The main exception to this I can recall is the old style bread oven which was essentially a brick alcove -- faggots were burned inside the oven to heat the bricks, the...

    Midland Game Fair

Just found out (at 2230 the night before) that due to the generosity of a very good friend, I'm going, which means leaving the house at milk o'clock. Should be a cracking day out.

    The changing seasons

There's no denying it, autumn is just about here. The kids are back at school, the wheat was cut weeks ago, squiggers are burying nuts like crazy. There's a chill every morning which can last til lunchtime. Sloes, haws and elderberries are near ready and the blackberries are near finished...

Badger Cull (here we go again...)

I guess we'll soon have more evidence to consider in that case. As I understand it the results of the trials were ambiguous, being influenced by the boundaries of the trial area. A larger trial is the next logical step.

    Silk char cloth

Surely silk is a protein based fibre whereas cotton and linen are carbon based?

What would a Mongol archer pour onto his stirrups before a battle?

It's been a few years since I was last in the saddle and it's been even longer since I was last part of a Mongol horde, but I wouldn't want to pour glue on my stirrups. The only reasonable explanation I can think of would be some ritual libation -- blood for good luck for instance.

    BBQ Forge?

Are you wanting a forge for forging steel to shape or a heat source for heat-treating your blades? I figure that a ground forge is much better than a barbeque. It's essentially a hole the size of your two fists put together dug into the earth, and an air pipe poked into the side of the hole.

    dry food suggestion

I find the water needed with coucous is about 1:1 -- one 'measure' of couscous, one measure of water. Makes life simple (I like simple).
