You are right the pump does start as soon as you open the door but only when the door is fully open. You need to watch that it does not close slightly when you have it attached to the mat or it stops pumping.

I should have added that sometimes these adapters need a little filing to make them pit properly but it only takes a second. Also you can still get the original flat and Philips head bits for these screwdrivers. Just search for Yankee Bits on ebay or the like.
