I've found the midges ignore the Thermacell, which is a pity as it works great on most other bugs :( A Smudgepot is the only thing that's keeps them off you, even Smidge doesn't do much for me.
A net is a definite plus- if you've been lucky with insects so far then good for you. But all it takes is one night of being eaten to death to realise how useful they are. Get one that can be unzipped and folded back, then you have the best of both worlds.
Oh, and go for the longest hammock you...
That's not a Buffalo, that's the Brit Army issue top. Fleece on the inside instead of pile. A nice top on it's own but not a Buffalo, as you have found. And you try putting it on/taking it off when you have a fleece on! :)
Got a Montane as well as a Buffalo, it is quite a bit beefier on the insulation side of things and very nicely made. Still love my Buffalo, though. Used to have a Snugpak pile shirt, again a very nice piece but sizing is on the flipping big side.
A word of warning with Arktis - a chum and I have...
I do like the Stingray but you will find it's capacity slightly lacking after a PLCE pack - yes it's more comfortable but once your sleeping bag goes in you aren't left with a lot of space, at least that's what I found. And all the surplus ones are getting on in years with fading camo and...
Decathlon do a range of jackets and gilets at a good price. Worth a look, I h ave one of the warmer ones and very pleased with it.
Also have a Craghoppers compresslite jacket that packs down to nothing but has been wonderfully warm and really surprised me how nice it is.
One final thought......the British Army have replaced the PLCE kit with the new shiny Virtus stuff. The new bergen has loads of bells and whistles.......and is roundly hated by everyone who has to use it :)
Go on, spoil yourself!
I've owned and used a huge amount of civvie and surplus bags - the PLCE one is a classic and, while not the most comfortable ever it is a great size, unburstable and a great price. You can cinch the side straps down to make it smaller, so no need to carry 120 liters of gear every trip :) I've...
Something we started doing last winter was to take an additional small cheap tarp (nasty poundshop thing) and set that up over the fire. That way your main tarp can be set up to keep the wind and rain off you the best and the fire can be set somewhere appropriate (depending on wind and how cold...
Yes, these are sized like normal clothing, not at all like the earlier softie jacket and trousers (which were huge!). Buy the size you are, nicely cut.
I've got the earlier DPM version of this - great pack, its made by PRI. Got normal rocket pouches zipped on and it has loads of space without being too massive a pack. Recommended!
